The Arctic Ice is at its Smallest Extent Ever Recorded

Arctic sea ice cover has averaged around 8 million square kilometers a year since the 1970s.  Now, the dramatic collapse in ice cover over the course of one year is highly unusual. A new record low is expected to be declared in the next few days. It is based on a five-day average, reported by the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado.
