The Big-Lie Coup d’Etat
JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BP, Chevron, WalMart, and billionaires Charles and David Koch are launching a multi-million dollar TV ad buy Tuesday blasting President Obama over the national debt.
Actually, I don’t know who’s behind this ad because there’s no way to know. And that’s a big problem.
The front group for the ad is Crossroads GPS, the sister organization to the super PAC American Crossroads run by Republican political operative Karl Rove.
Because Crossroads GPS is a tax-exempt nonprofit group, it can spend unlimited money on politics — and it doesn’t have to reveal where it gets the dough.
By law, all it has to do is spent most of the money on policy “issues,” which is a fig leaf for partisan politics.
Here’s what counts as an issue ad, as opposed to a partisan one. The narrator in the ad Crossroads GPS is launching solemnly intones: “In 2008, Barack Obama said, ‘We can’t mortgage our children’s future on a mountain of debt.’ Now he’s adding $4 billion in debt every day, borrowing from China for his spending. Every second, growing our debt faster than our economy,” he continues. “Tell Obama, stop the spending.”
This is a bald face lie, by the way.
Obama isn’t adding to the debt every day. The debt is growing because of obligations entered into long ago, many under George W. Bush – including two giant tax cuts that went mostly to the very wealthy that were supposed to be temporary and which are still going, courtesy of Republican blackmail over raising the debt limit.
In realty, government spending as a portion of GDP keeps dropping.
As I said, I don’t know who’s financing this big lie but there’s good reason to think it’s some combination of Wall Street, big corporations, and the billionaire Koch brothers.
According to the reliable inside-Washington source “Politico,” the Koch brothers’ network alone will be spending $400 million over the next six months trying to defeat Obama, which is more than Senator John McCain spent on his entire 2008 campaign.
Big corporations and Wall Street are also secretly funneling big bucks into front groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that will use the money to air anti-Obama ads, while keeping secret the identities of these firms.
Looking at the all the anti-Obama super PACs and political fronts like Crossroads GPS, Politico estimates the anti-Obama forces (including the Romney campaign) will outspend Obama and pro-Obama groups by 2 to 1.
How can it be that big corporations and billionaires will be spending unlimited amounts on big lies like this one, without any accountability because no one will know where the money is coming from?
Blame a majority of the Supreme Court in its grotesque 2010 Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission decision — as well as the IRS for lax enforcement that lets political front groups like Crossroads GPS or the U.S. Chamber of Commerce pretend they’re not political.
But you might also blame something deeper, more sinister.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist (you can’t have served in Washington and seriously believe more than two people can hold on to a big story without it leaking), but I fear that at least since 2010 we’ve been witnessing a quiet, slow-motion coup d’etat whose purpose is to repeal every bit of progressive legislation since the New Deal and entrench the privileged positions of the wealthy and powerful — who haven’t been as wealthy or as powerful since the Gilded Age of the late 19th century.
Its techique is to inundate America with a few big lies, told over and over (the debt is Obama’s fault and it’s out of control; corporations and the very rich are the “job creators” that need tax cuts; government is the enemy, and its regulations are strangling the private sector; unions are bad; and so on), and tell them so often they’re taken as fact.
Then having convinced enough Americans that these lies are true, take over the White House, Congress, and remaining states that haven’t yet succumbed to the regressive right (witness Tuesday’s recall election in Wisconsin).
I desperately hope I’m wrong, but all there’s growing evidence I may be right.

You know, the right in America, that is the Republicans and their allies, the tea party, the evangelicals, the billionaire-plutocrats, and so on, are into something that is very old, and whose most consummate practitioner was Dr. Goebbels, Hitler's propaganda minister who was a monster, but a genius too. He knew that if you repeat enough times a lie, it becomes the truth, and the bigger the lie, the easier it is to do it. Thus the Jews were responsible for all the ills in Germany, and they should be eliminated. In the US, the message that is being relentlessly being hammered into the people's heads is: the liberals, the tax-and-spenders, who are crypto-socialists anyway, are responsible for all American ills. The right is succeeding because they have the money. They will outspend Obama and the Democrats two to one in the presidential election. Scott Walker's victory in Wisconsin is a foretaste of what is to come. Let's face it, unfortunately, the US, for all intents and purposes, has already become a plutocracy. Only a Second American Revolution can save America. But I am convinced that it will come. I can see it coming. I can hear it coming...

WE, the People are under siege by all. The rich, the banks, the (non) news media. The news reporters know what's going on, but are prevented from calling out the liars - on orders from "above". So, Faux nonnews set the precedent, the other "news" stations are falling in line. Everyone is being bought off, the supreme court's ruling only hastened everything.

This election is becoming a bad fiction read! Why can't this lies be called out? There was a certain Nazi that stated ," if you continue to state a lie as the truth, it becomes the truth" I'm tired of watching these reporters letting the politicians stating these lies right to there faces, knowing it's a lie and not questioning the truth of there answer! All the news outlets should be considered entertainment, not news! They are a platform for the politicians to spout there twisted account of history or the facts of an issue, allowing this myth to expand to the truth! The truth is easy to defend, a lie has to be vigorously defended. This is a classic case of enabling the politicians, and I'm tired of spending my time watching a fairy tale, instead of news!

"Looking at the all the anti-Obama super PACs and political fronts like Crossroads GPS, Politico estimates the anti-Obama forces (including the Romney campaign) will outspend Obama and pro-Obama groups by 2 to 1." There should be a modicum of gratefulness that this figure wasn't 10 to 1 or 20 to 1 as the tone of this article suggests. Like it or not, it is a candid admission that both parties were playing the same game. And the fact that the loser is desperately trying to find someone to pin the blame on is childishly predictable.

How do we know the money is even from Wall Street and not Chinese, Iranian, North Korean...
The beauty of anonymity is you just don't know and why should you care, isn't the money entitled to a vote?

That picture featured in the article, the one showing a fist bump between the murderer and Michelle, makes me wonder if the verbal exchange between the two was..."I'm glad Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan and Somalia don't yet have drones...or we might be "targets".

It's too bad Kevin Philips is in retirement. This is a good article, Dr. Reich, and right on the proverbial "money". Dr. Philips would be pleased.

Good night Obama. You abandoned your base, and now your base will stay hone in November and watch reruns of Northern Exposure while Romney, Rove, and Koch become the next leaders of the United States.
You'll be remembered as just another president who didn't do shit to fight right wing extremism, anti-rights activists, nor the ever shrinking middle class. Nor will you be remembered for bringing a sense of stability through security to the people.
No. You will be remembered by the right as the first black president who failed in his duties, true or not.

Obama, the murderer, will be remembered by the right as their first black President. Good night is right DW.

Who would have ever thought that after 8 years of Bush and Cheney, two wars, one based on abject lies that even the most casual observer could identify, that the Republican pathological liars actually have a shot at winning back the white house.
With the economy as it was, President Obama--should have known even before taking the oath of office that he would only be afforded one shot at the president gig, and gone FDR all over the republicans. The people were behind him and what did he do--Health Insurance Reform-his base got hosed big time.

CWILD and NORMAN ALLEN have it right. It is really scary to think what November will bring. I wish Justice Stevens would get started immediately on the Citizen's United fiasco. It should be overturned before November, even earlier. And Judge Alito sat there and shook his head when Obama predicted that elections would be bought. Here we are with the dumbing down of Americans--so brainwashed by the religious right that they can't think for themselves. Big Brother, here we come!

Obama catered to the vampire squid at the expense of his supporters, now it's his turn to be on the menu. Sounds fair to me.

I agree. Obama was a sham.

I feel like I am watching the karma chicken's coming home to roost. Since the first white MAN stepped on to this continent they have pillaged their way to where we are today. Frankly, I am scared, since 9/11 when the Bush administration pounded fear into every American's head, I have seen the numbing or our citizenry to the point that we are maybe past the point of being able to turn back the on slot of the robber baron's will take it all. What will it look like when they have accomplished their goal...hey they are almost there. Wake up folks, your lives depend on it. The one thing we have left, and even that is being undermined, is the right to vote. Why didn't every eligible voter in Wisconsin vote yesterday? Didn't they see how serious this was. Walker was beatable, spent millions to barely squeeze in a win. It is just very sad to me that a huge part of our citizens are just laying down and giving up.

Two major issues are working against Mr. Obama: 1. Race: Most white males still feel superior to others due to faulty social values (they still live in 19th century paradigm of while male supremacy). 2. Economics: Most whites, especially males, UNFAIRLY, feel Mr. Obama has not turned around the economy in the past three years. These people do NOT understand that destroying a society/economy is a lot easier (two wars fought with borrowed money while axing ESTATE tax, and other taxes for the most wealthy). They do not recognize that instead of losing jobs, the economy persistently added jobs every month in the past three years.
Mr. Obama's problem is not ability, facts or the desire to serve ALL Americans. His problem is historical, cultural: BIGOTRY. The cure for America is getting its elites out of their comfort zone to face the reality of human condition: It is 21st century. We , the 99% will never accept a society based on race, religion, national origin, sex, or other natural factors over which we have no control. It is not the color or the skin but the content of character. I rather be with the 99% any day of the year than one hour in the company of the 1%. I have seen both world and prefer the people to elites.
