A study published this month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), was based on teachers in biology, chemistry, and physics, three hard sciences where men outnumber women. The researchers found that, based on these fake candidates, professors preferred those with male names—and offered them a starting salary averaging $4,000 more than candidates with female names.
