It’s Wallet and Pocketbook Issues, Stupid

Article image

Media commentary on the presidential election often focuses on controversial issues like Libya or the latest absurd claim made by some candidate about rape, and of course these are issues of some significance.

But judging by conversations I've overheard in my local barbershop and grocery store, what really matters to ordinary folk are wallet and pocketbook issues. They are also issues that presidents have limited (if any) control over, but that doesn't stop voters from assigning blame to the current president while placing their hope in a new guy, even if the latter's life experiences are completely divorced from their working-class, day-to-day struggles.

My neighbors complain about the price of gasoline and that to fill the large-capacity tanks in their pickup trucks can cost upwards of $100.00. They complain about the rising costs of groceries, which of course is partly related to high gas prices. Simply put, they're worried about paying the bills. They're worried about empty wallets and pocketbooks. Left unsaid is that they're worried about slipping a notch. They're worried about being considered lower class instead of middle class. They're worried about being, in a word, poor.

President Obama favors connecting to people with lofty rhetoric and vague slogans like "forward." It's not good enough. In the closing days of this campaign, he needs to do a better job of connecting with "the folks," as he likes to say, and their very real worries about making ends meet.

Bill Clinton knew this. He knew how to talk about feeling people's pain, and he had a way of doing so that made people believe in him. Obama needs to do a better job about reassuring the American people that he too feels their pain. That he's determined to put more money back in their wallets and pocketbooks. That he's determined to lower gasoline and grocery prices. That he's determined to keep the American dream alive: the simple dream of being able to live one's life in economic security, on one's own terms, without the shame of being dependent on handouts.

Show some determination on these wallet and pocketbook issues, Mr. President, and you win. Vague and lofty rhetoric is not enough. Not when so many people are hurting.

I can tell you that Obama has been a castastrophy and if Romney wins so will he
as over the past 35 years we have not solved ssi and the people taking from it who should not. Energy independence has not changed either as even if the oil comes from our own country the oil companies will sell to the highest bidder so
India and China get alot of that oil as well. Campaign finance has not changed for 35 years either as it seems all of our reps are non lubricated whores. What ever happened to on the job training that is what this country needs funding in
so we can compete with foreign countries but that has not changed either.
35 YEARS OF THE SAME OLD SHIT average people dont have any expendable because of the same old shit!! Maybe I can afford some new shit with corn in it
that ought to be cheaper. In four years we will still have the same old shit only probabally worse where do we ever go from here there has got to be a better idea out there than the same old shit I f we still have the same old shit in two years shouldnt we ask both parties to step down and get out of the way?

To start off with, the head of the Republican party stated from day one that their prime objective would be to make sure Obama was a one term President no matter what the cost. They would make sure that nothing would get done and all Obama's work would be derailed. They were not interested in making sure the people or economy was taken care of, just derailing Obama. Unfortunately, the people, the real tax payers are the ones who paid the cost. We lost jobs while the corporations sat on tons of money. We lost our homes while the banks sat on tons of bailout money they arranged to get as Bush left office leaving Obama no legal recourse but to let them have what was done before he took office. We are at the lowest dependence on foreign oil ever in history, our energy demand is also at the lowest but the corporations which back the Republican party have refused to lower the price of gas while attaining record making profits. Obama tried to push for better gas mileage but was derailed by Republicans.

The problem with social security is that Bush and his buddies borrowed the money to fight the pissy little wars rather than raise taxes for them. Consequently the money is dwindling, and the debt is artificially high as they owe the money to our SS fund. I don't know what people you are referring to who should not get SS but there s plenty of money left there by people who work all their lives and don't live long enough to collect it. Anyone who is killed in a car accident and has no minor children leaves their money in the pot. Any unmarried person who dies before collecting leaves their money in the pot, as do all gay people these days. In order to collect SS, you have to pay into it if you haven't paid into it there is a separate fund known as SSI, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes): It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and it provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

You have a point when it comes to campaign reform, it has not been reformed in 35 years, and again any attempts at reform have been stalled by the Republicans. Just this year they stalled a bill to disclose campaign contributions. Ron Paul one of the others ie not R or D says that campaign reform is unconstitutional. A conservative Supreme Court has established that corporations are people so until we fight the Citizens United, reform will not come.

People in the US generally are wasteful consumers who are spoiled and have no gratitude for their lifestyle. They want everything, new, shiny, and cheap, there is never enough for the lower middle class and up. They often feel entitled like you. You feel you are entitled to your opinion and you obviously like to complain but you don’t know what you are talking about.

Dont know what I am talking about!! I personally know Russians not us citizens who are over 65 years old they get social seccurity and children of illegal immigrants they get social security even though they cant spend the
money as they are infants. I know wealthy us citizens that really dont need ssi but they get it and I also know drug addicts that pretend they cant pass a simple square peg in a round hole they get ssi for mental problems that dont exist. Yes I like to complain when it is justified as the democrats had a majority for the first two years so they both parties are to blame so they both should get their asses out as incompetance seems contageous.
Open your eyes bun bun boy and admit that we are grossely under represented get that into your head and maybe we could have progress.
Later bun bun boy. By the way Obama endorsed the funds going to the banks also it was Mccain that said it would be easier to just pay off the mortgages. If we wernt spending on ssi we would have more for social security.

You don't have to be a citizen to get social security, you only have to be here legally and have paid into the system. Children of illegal immigrants cannot and someone is feeding you a line of crap. I don't associate with too many drug addicts and you say you know these people so I'm not sure about you at all. Personally a drug addict has a lot of mental problems but I am sure you have no compassion for most people. Again SSI and social security are not tied to each other. Social security is low because it was borrowed to fight illegal wars, not because of SSI. I certainly am under represented because I would not borrow money to fight a war because some fool wanted to kill my dad. I would spend money on a one payer health insurance so that we go the best deal and people who don't work for large companies could afford the same decent health benefits as the senate does. I would not let health insurance be profit driven, it would be health driven. I would spend money educating the entire population so I could save money on prisons. I would spend money on rehab and mental health programs so I could save money on prisons. Portugal legalized ALL drugs and spent the money on rehab and mental health instead of the war on drugs. That was a decade ago, today their crime rate is down, their drug addiction is down, and life is much more pleasant. I would spend money helping farmers grow more crops without the chemicals and GMO crops put out by Monsanto and we might be able to save our water supply. I am really under represented and aren't you glad?

Obama isn't responsible for high gas prices? He purposely had restricted oil production across this country and made it impossible to burn coal and has made sure that nuclear power is impossible to build. Why? Simply to help these crony investments in so- called green companies economically viable. His only regret is that a gallon if gas only costs $5 and not $10. He likes to claim that increasing production won't reduce the price of gas but he periodically likes to release oil from the strategic reserve to drop the price when politically expedient. If releasing oil from this vital national reserve can drop prices why can't increasing drilling domestically?

Obamacare increased the cost of my health insurance for my employees by 30% this year - why? Because handing out free contraceptives and free breast pumps isn't free and he mandated that insurance companies have to hand these discretionary items out with no co-pay so now everyone else has to foot the bill for these expenses. If ladies want to indulge in recreational sex why Am. I paying for there sporting equipment? Next i guess we will be handing out free hair combs and sunglasses as well for free. If you ran a small business you would know the level of brainless and useless regulations promulgated since this child took office is increasing the costs for every business in America and these costs are passed on to consumers. Obama deserves all the credit for this dead economy and the economic pain in America since he became dictator and he will get the retribution he deserves in about a week. He spent $1.000,000 on a party for the president of the country that feeds massive drugs and criminals to this country while your neighbors can't afford to fill their gas tanks and 20 million Americans can't find jobs- he surely is immune to their pain.

May you produce offspring everytime you have sex until you die. May you have to hand pump the milk from the mother's breast to feed the child. May you be forced to breathe the fouled air that comes from not going green. May your family bleed from the violence that stems from the war on drugs that would be better fought with legalization and rehab. May your son go to prison for having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend as soon as he turns 18. May all you daughters be raped and get pregnat because their bodies thought it was okay. May your brain atrophy further so that you cease to be able to bother the rest of us with your drivel.....old gypsy curse on people like you

"Recreational sex"? Many of these ladies are married, and if they didn't engage in sex their husbands would get really cranky. So why begrudge them at least the choice of not getting pregnant every year? And your insurance costs would go UP if it had to pay for her pregnancy, delivery and then insure another child.

They certainly have reason to worry. Most of us are a single job loss from losing absolutely everything. This generation has virtually criminalized poverty. America's treatment of the poor today is quite frightening, and no matter how much we try to tell ourselves that good, hard-working Americans could never become The Poor, we know better.

One thing that is never mentioned in the campaign is how the ever-increasing executive pay has affected the cost of goods/services to the consumer. I have yet to hear about any large Corporate CEO or executive taking a paycut or bonus cut to retain employees jobs...but I have read year after year about raises in pay from 25% during the year after 2008 to regular annual increases of 35%. So, it's not just 'oil prices' (how about oil executive pay ?) that is increasing costs to your neighbors...it's the other 99% paying for the self-indulgence of those at the top. Top heavy pay needs to take reductions from the top down, redistributing to those workers who are holding up the load.

Good point but heavens forbid anyone really look into the profit motive here. All most are interested in is getting more than their share. A complete lack of education is obvious. The GINI score of the US is going up, that simply means that the upper groups is taking more and more off the top leaving less and less for the rest. Wal-Mart could pay their people $12.50 an hour and the resulting raise in prices would cost the average shopper $12.50 a year. I would probably shop at Wal-Mart if they paid a decent wage to their employees. The present head of Wal-Mart made over $16,826.92 an hour in 2010, employees made $8.75, only got 30 hours a week and no benefits. Yet the ignorant greedy citizenry continues to shop there for things they don't really need to survive. What kind or world could we create if we looked out for each other as well as ourselves?

Corporations are owned by shareholders- if your a shareholder and think the guy managing often hundreds of thousands of employees is paid too much sell the shares. You don't get to dictate what salaried shareholders can pay the people they hire to manage their company- goofball. A-rod gets paid $100,000,000 a year to hit a ball but that seems reasonable to you i beat. And what about movie stars- should we decide that the most a movie star ca get paid is $1,000,000 a movie? Shareholders elect a board and that board hires management and pays them what they feel is necessary to get the most talented guy - like a steve jobs- that can build the company - and which also makes it possible to hire employees as well make a profit for shareholders.
Hiring an incompetent and inexperienced manager can result in horrible consequences as America has discovered in the four years that a community organizer- really he was just living off his wife's real job of course- was hired to run the largest organization in the world. Managing a giant organization successfully takes incredible and rare talent- no less than playing the violin at concert level - you clearly have no understanding of business and economics and corporate structure. You probably even went to college- taking greek classic classes does take its toll doesn't it?

Share holders sale their shares for a loss all the time, that doesn't change the fact that CEOs are over paid and you have no understanding of how goverment should run if you think Bush did a good job because Mitt is Bush-lite.

This issue does come up, but I think the problem is that we don't know what to do about it. No matter, Americans are much more concerned about how the poor use their meager food stamp allotments.
