A federal judge has stepped up to the plate and is now ordering FDA regulators to start proceedings to revoke the approval for the use of common antibiotics in animal feed, stating that the excessive overuse of antibiotics is threatening public health through breeding drug-resistant superbugs. The news could not have come at a more appropriate time; after it was just recently revealed that antibiotic overuse has actually spawned a resistant ‘white plague‘ that threatens the health of individuals worldwide. Thanks to the countless unnecessary prescriptions of antibiotics dished out in nations like India, a heavily drug-resistant form of tuberculosis has scientists concerned over a potential pandemic.

United States Magistrate Judge Theodore Katz ordered the FDA to begin with the initiative unless the drug manufacturers can prove that their usage in the food supply is safe. It would be highly unlikely that the drug makers could produce evidence showing that the antibiotic consumption is safe, considering that antibiotics have been linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and even skyrocketing mental illness rates. This is in addition to creating massively resistant superbugs that are considered to be impossible to treat by mainstream medicine.

The Independent reports:

Using standard antibiotic regimens, there is a one in 10 chance that treatment of an E.coli infection will fail because the bug is resistant. But, as numbers of resistant infections rise, there will be increasing pressure to use more powerful antibiotics, called carbapenems, which are the last line available. And resistance to those is already emerging…The warnings follow increasing reports from Europe of patients with infections that are almost impossible to treat.

It is for this reason that groups have sued the FDA over the use of antibiotics in animal feed, citing legitimate safety concerns. In a lawsuit led by both environmental and health-advocacy groups, the organizations allege that he FDA knew years ago that loading up livestock full of penicillin and tetracyclines (the 2 antibiotics in question) was causing bacteria to become resistant to drugs that humans rely upon to fight infections. The result? The development of such superbugs and mutated viruses.  Shockingly, the group also reported on a particularly worrying statistic showing just how many antibiotics are given to livestock and subsequently consumed by the public. “Approximately 80% of all antibiotics used in the United States today are used in livestock,” the group explained in the suit.

Drug-resistant infections not only wreak havoc on public health, but cost American taxpayers more than $20 billion each year, according to a 2009 study from the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics and Cook County Hospital. There’s simply no reason to continue the dangerous practice of dosing up livestock with antibiotics. Judge Katz explains:

“In the intervening years, the scientific evidence of the risks to human health from the widespread use of antibiotics in livestock has grown, and there is no evidence that the FDA has changed its position that such uses are not shown to be safe,” wrote the Magistrate Judge .

The author has again over-extended the reach of his science knowledge by including the problem of drug-resistant TB in this problem of antibiotic abuse leading to human disease bacterias' resistance to ordinary antibiotics. Drugs that are used for tuberculosis are very different from the ones that are given to livestock to promote rapid growth. Other factors do contribute to the development of drug-resistance, so I wish Anthony were a little more restrained in his arguments, or had a little bit better of a grasp of the science in this important area of food/agriculture. This series of articles on the subject has covered very important issues, but I'm afraid it's been marred by some bigger errors than this one. Get a technical editor, Anthony.

This is part of the way to a better future. The judge has calculated that the high cost of a pandemic is certainly not worth the money that agribusinesses and farms can save through over use of antibiotics. The rest of the path will have to include the intention to do no harm regardless of profit margin, the recognition that we live in a system that is interconnected on all levels, obvious and not so obvious. What we do is never an isolated incident, on the contrary, it affects every other life form. There is a way to balance and our most effective pressure is realizing the consequences of imbalance, but we can develop to the point that we don't have to wait for the consequences. The responsible among us have already refused to consume antibiotics by refusing to eat this tainted meat. Together, we need to keep moving toward a better future!

The Fraud and Deceit Administration needs a complete overhaul....Congress is way overdue to begin the process....of course Congress is under the same Corporate paw the the FDA is...I mean....no GMO labeling, only 2% of imported food is inspected...growth hormones in our milk, genetically engineered salmon...and this is only a smidgeon of what's going on....the Food and Water Watch, and the Cornucopia Institute are reliable places to start and belong......

Hi,

At last a bit of headway about this very wrongheaded practice. 9 years ago I was part of a committee sponsored by a major environmental organization fighting this problem in Minnesota and beyond. It was so bad then that the committee had a few drug company moles inside. After a year or so the national club suspended our state funding for the program. One of our members was a Mayo Infectious Disease Specialist and we simply had the truth about the danger of animal feed containing antibiotics to human health. But, the drug companies don't like anyone who may cut into their bottom line in peddling these life saving agents to CAFO livestock industries.

Three cheers for the judge who has started the process of ending this really bad thing..........

This is the place for regulation. Who would be the first to cut his profit margin by stopping the use of antibiotics in feed? When everyone can't use them, then they won't be used.

A US judge with knowledge about issues and concerned about the PEOPLE"S health instead of the corporate profits? What a pleasant anomaly... May the FORCE increase your numbers, SIR! And may the FORCE give courage/good judgement to the rest of the judges when deciding between public interest and corporate profits so the corporate greed does not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs for the corporate CEOs/Board members and their protectors in the government.

So let's recap the state of this health catastrophe.

Just so that our burgers will cost us a dollar to make, rather than two dollars, Americans are "willing" to take on a future of antibiotic-resistant diseases.

And the INSTRUMENT of that "willingness" to be sold into a future of rampant disease, is the very agency (the FDA) that was first INTENDED to focus on supporting the people's health, against the ravages of industry.

Really, this is a very plain statement of the reality we see in front of us. Industry has BOUGHT our government, and is using its offices to further their agenda of fleecing the rest of us for their own benefit (and oh yeah, don't forget KILLING us in the process!).

Ho hum. Another way the Rich Reich are killing the poor for their own profits? What's new? Wake me up when we get to Oz...

Healthy foods mean healthy people. Healthy people are bad for business for the pharmaceutical and medical industries. We simply can't have both healthy people and record drug, medical and insurance industry profits for wall street. Healthy food for healthy people is unpatriotic socialist dogma that would deprive the rich of pennies from their pockets. Be an American, support the rich and eat your antibiotics!
