Occupy Oakland Editor's Note: Below is the proposal passed by the Occupy Oakland General Assembly on Wednesday October 26, 2011 in reclaimed Oscar Grant Plaza. 1607 people voted. 1484 voted in favor of the resolution, 77 abstained and 46 voted against it, passing the proposal at 96.9%. The General Assembly operates on a modified consensus process that passes proposals with 90% in favor and with abstaining votes removed from the final count.

PROPOSAL:

We as fellow occupiers of Oscar Grant Plaza propose that on Wednesday November 2, 2011, we liberate Oakland and shut down the 1%.

We propose a city wide general strike and we propose we invite all students to walk out of school. Instead of workers going to work and students going to school, the people will converge on downtown Oakland to shut down the city.

All banks and corporations should close down for the day or we will march on them.

While we are calling for a general strike, we are also calling for much more. People who organize out of their neighborhoods, schools, community organizations, affinity groups, workplaces and families are encouraged to self organize in a way that allows them to participate in shutting down the city in whatever manner they are comfortable with and capable of.

The whole world is watching Oakland. Let’s show them what is possible.

The Strike Coordinating Council will begin meeting everyday at 5pm in Oscar Grant Plaza before the daily General Assembly at 7pm. All strike participants are invited.

I'm a little confused here as to the time of the general strike gathering on Wednesday. I've seen a time for a march at 7pm. What is happening during the day? If the strike is for the day, why wait till the evening?

The chutspah of Paul Ryan. He accuses us of setting Americans against each other while he and his cruel GOP party coddle millionaires and cut the programs for the poor.

The world watches. The great turning is upon us. It is now a choice between a cancerous culture and life itself. The 99% are chosing life.

A nationwide general strike and mass day of action isn't a new thing. If memory (and history) serves, in 1932, a series of general strikes and mass days of action affected many Americans cities as workers walked off their jobs, engaged in mass marches to the financial districts of several major cities, and local shop owners closed their businesses in solidarity with the communities they served. Members of the "Bonus Army" took to the streets to demand the benefits they were promised, and those within the 1% of that day were shocked and surprised by the ferocity of the 99%, and this did lead to constructive social action in the wake of the general strike when much of the nation's business, except for emergency services, came to a screeching halt.

Now is the time to shut down the 1% nationwide, and to hit them everywhere, from the monster mega-banks to the entertainment industry (movies, TV, etc..). A general strike against commerce, entertainment and finance will demonstrate that the 99% are getting sick and tired of the 1% constantly consuming the fruits of their labors, neutralizing their innate creativity, transforming them into commodities which can be bought and sold on the cheap, and hollowing out the nation's political, social and spiritual life, and if it means hanging up a sign reading "NO BUSINESS AS USUAL" and walking away from the ugly commercial machine, then perhaps the massive, nationwide general strike and mass day of action will have served a purpose by giving the 1% something it's been needing for a long time ... a major reality check which will be served on them by the 99%.

My intuition and your words above convince me this strike is extremely important. We must move forward to show the 1% we are very seriously and urgently in need of democracy in America. Thanks to all attending strike.

I will be in Oakland on Nov. 2. While we know that "trickle down" was a lie. We've got a message for the 1% and their wholly owned subsidiaries in Congress that most certainly will trickle UP: Business as usual just won't do.

Keep it peaceful, keep it clean and join me there.
