The Military-Industrial-Media Complex Comes to Charlotte for the DNC
Jingoistic platitudes were all the rage at the recently-completed Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
Foreign Policy Magazine’s Uri Friedman reported that Democratic Party apparatchiks used Osama Bin Laden’s name, in bragging about slaughtering him, some 21 times during the DNC. By way of contrast, according to Friedman’s count, there was only one mention of Bin Laden at the Republican National Convention, which took place the week before in Tampa.
One of the more memorable lines, in making the case for another four years in office for the 2009 Nobel Prize Peace Prize winning Laureate-in-Chief, came from U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA). He stated (emphasis mine),
And after more than — after more than 10 years without justice for thousands of Americans murdered on 9/11, after Mitt Romney said it would be naive to go into Pakistan to pursue the terrorists, it took President Obama, against the advice of many, to give that order and finally rid this earth of Osama bin Laden.
Ask Osama bin Laden is he is better off now than he was four years ago.
Vice President Joe Biden went so far to boast triumphantly, “Osama Bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive.”
This bellicose rhetoric on the part of Kerry, Biden and others moved investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill to compare the language to “jingoism that belonged in a sports bar” in an appearance on MSNBC’s “Up With Chris Hayes.” Now billing itself as the “Lean Forward” network (a hilarious premise in of itself, given that it’s owned by General Electric, a weapons manufacturer), Scahill said MSNBC’s DNC coverage might as well have been an Obama for America salon.
“Many of the media discussions, including here on MSNBC, about foreign policy during the convention felt like we were watching an Obama for America meet-up, not an actual serious critique of this president’s most egregious aspects of his foreign policy, where you do see that of the Republicans,” he said on “Up With Chris Hayes.”
General Electric has given Democratic Party candidates at a federal level $510,400 so far in the 2012 election cycle, according to Open Secrets.
Antiwar.com readers won’t be surprised by any of this. What was surprising, though, was one of the more shameless displays by the Military-Industrial-Media Complex at the “Nightly Lounge” festive gatherings hosted by the Beltway media outlet, Politico.
One of the co-sponsors of the nightly ritual was none other than BAE Systems, another weapons manufacturer and war contractor, which has given $233,000 to Democrats so far in the run up to the 2012 elections, according to Open Secrets.
The nightly fiesta also included a delicious BAE Systems-sponsored specialty drink, the “BAE Systems Countermeasure,” which I ordered while having the pleasure to attend one of the soirees.
Why will November feature an election between Liberal Hawks and Neoconservatives? Just follow the money.
As Smedley Butler wrote long ago,
War is a racket. It always has been.
It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.
Whoever resides in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue after November 6, 2012, at least one major thing is already settled: the war racket has no end in sight.

Indeed, Petercraig. Are these sites getting more and more like the scourge of the 24 hour television news cycle, seeking more and more outliers to have something to talk about?

how about this line from republican Peter King on Meet the Press today describing Obama's presidency "there has never been a post 9-11 administration that has acted this way"....right none of those other post 9-11 administrations .

The abstract for this opinion made Scahill's criticism out to be Biden's, which made for a very skewed introduction. Not a good omen for NOC.

I always thought the main purpose of the conventions, other than selecting the parties' nominees, was to get the party members, campaign workers, and volunteers revved up and eager to give 110% to snaring voters and getting out the vote during the final two months before the election. OF COURSE Bin Laden was mentioned frequently during the Democratic convention; his elimination was an Obama triumph. By the same token, OF COURSE Bin Laden received scant attention during the Republican convention; his escape was a significant Bush failure, and something the Republicans would prefer to be forgotten.
Who (other than Mr. Horn) would denigrate Joe Biden for his victorious shout that "Bin Laden is Dead and General Motors is Alive"? A double Obama victory.
Come on, Mr. Horn--get real.

Democrats, Republicans: both desperately need a purge.

Steve Horn strikes me as a bit naive, like an idealistic teen-ager who hasn't met the real world yet. While one could certainly wish that money had no significant part in either of the political conventions, to criticize the Democratic party convention, after the "jingoism" and me-first platitudes and hypocritical attacks of the Republicans in their meeting, is hardly fair or pragmatic.
Of course the DNC would try to emphasize the positive accomplishments of the sitting president, after the viewing public had seen the harsh criticisms of the Republicans the previous week. What did Steve Horn expect the Democrats to do, sit around singing "Kumbaya" and passing the collection plate?
Remember,if you will, that it was Bush who ignored the warnings of the outgoing president about the serious threat from bin Laden. It was Bush who named bin Laden as our most wanted criminal, and swore that he would seek justice and get him, no matter what it took.
Then Bush let bin Laden get away because he was too focused on the unnecessary war against Saddam Hussein. It was Bush (and Karl Rove and his buddies) who defeated John Kerry by convincing the voters that they would be safer with Bush at the helm. (How ridiculous that was!)
Yet he left office with bin Laden still alive and a threat. So OF COURSE the killing of bin Laden was touted in the Democratic convention. What did Horn expect? This is supposed to be a serious critique of the President or the DNC?
And the American public was traumatized by the events of 9/11 and they DO want a president who will keep them safe and secure. Naturally, Steve Horn!
At least Obama ended the war in Iraq. At least he's committed to getting out of this endless war in Afghanistan. At least he got the man who masterminded the 9/11 attacks, and killed many of the top figures in al Qaeda. And he's not rushing to war with Iran, but trying to solve the conflict by more peaceful means.
I want to see money having less power with the Democrats. Too many of them are sleeping with the enemy. But keep in mind who has the advantage in this election because of a ridiculous ruling by the conservative Supreme Court. Romney/Ryan are drawing far bigger donations than Obama, and they are largely from a collection of fat cats who hide behind closed doors. Keep in mind whose agenda serves the best interests of the 1%, to the detriment of the 99%.
So, grow up, Steve Horn, take off your rose-colored glasses, and help us elect the only chance we have to keep the extreme right wing from taking over the government and savaging programs that help the middle class and the poor.
If you have two major parties who have lost most, if not all, of their earlier commitment to their ideals, you choose the party whose agenda serves you best, elect their candidates, and then try to reform it. The 1% is backing Romney because he serves their interest best, being one of them himself. They don't have to reform his party, since it suits them fine. But the middle class has to elect the party that serves their interest best, and then set about reforming that party and our weakened system of democracy, by getting the damned money out of politics, whatever it takes (probably a constitutional amendment or two).

What Horn didn't mention is that 40% of GE's contributions in this election cycle have gone to the Dems, 60% have gone to the Republicans (Open Secrets). If they weren't at the GOP Convention (which I doubt), perhaps it was because they didn't need to be. GE is just hedging their bets by contributing to the Dems!

Your comment is so clearly true, and there are many other things he should've mentioned in the name of honesty and fair reporting. This article seems to be nothing more than a sham piece written to appease republicans and denigrate democrats... Perhaps Horn has a future in political speech writing for the republican party, or Fox News!

"Profit" is the standard by which everything else is measured. As long as those who control our leaders continue to see their margins increased we will have conflict. And if it doesn't come to us we'll manufacture it ala 9/11, Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea...someplace for the MIC to continue wallowing in their self-aggrandizement of anguish and death.

....and they weren't at the Republican Convention? You don't really believe that , do you?

Of course the same interests were at the repub convention, but considering that the writer of this diatribe conveniently thinks that war is the only enterprise that profits worldwide and ignores the myriad examples of other businesses that profit in the tens of billions worldwide (banks, hedge funds, and various other financial interests, energy companies, software companies, manufacturers, and countless other business entities just don't count, right?), then I'd have to say he actually does believe what his claim- a clear sign of shoddy journalism meant to push the writer's false claim as though it were true and to make democrats out to be the bad guys.
