Monsanto’s Roundup Altering the Physical Shape of Amphibians
Monsanto’s Roundup, which is the most popular herbicide used today, has been found to ignite morphological changes in amphibians. The research, conducted using tadpoles, found that environmentally relevant concentrations of Roundup are enough to cause two species of amphibians to actually change shape. This is the first research to show that herbicides can have such an affect on animals.
Setting up outdoor tanks closely resembling the environment of natural wetlands, study researcher Rick Relyea, University of Pittsburgh professor of biological sciences in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences and director of Pitt’s Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, added 3 tadpoles to each tank and exposed them to a range of Roundup concentrations over a 3 week period. The cages also contained large predators, which naturally cause changes in tadpole morphology. These natural changes include a larger tail, due to chemical emissions.
While it wasn’t surprising to see morphological changes take part due to the naturally emitted chemicals from predators, it was rather shocking to find out that Roundup had the same effects — causing the tails of the tadpoles to grow in size. What’s more, the combination of the naturally emitted chemicals and Roundup caused the tadpoles’ tails to grow twice as large. Seeing as tadpoles alter body shape in order to properly survive in its environment, the forced changes from herbicides like Roundup can put the animals at a disadvantage.
“This discovery highlights the fact that pesticides, which are important for crop production and human health, can have unintended consequences for species that are not the pesticide’s target. Herbicides are not designed to affect animals, but we are learning that they can have a wide range of surprising effects by altering how hormones work in the bodies of animals. This is important because amphibians not only serve as a barometer of the ecosystem’s health, but also as an indicator of potential dangers to other species in the food chain, including humans,” says Relyea.
In addition to physically altering tadpoles, Roundup has also been shown to be contributing to the decline of butterfly populations, though in a different way. Similar to how pesticides have been contributing to the bee decline, Monsanto’s Roundup has been tied to the decrease in the population of monarch butterflies by killing the very plants that the butterflies rely on for habitat and food.
As more research continues to be done, researchers continue to keep finding more pitfalls caused by Monsanto’s creations. We currently know enough to cease use of the corporation’s products, but there are undoubtedly further concerns yet to be revealed.

This makes Roundup a mutagen. Why does it not say that on its label?
"In genetics, a mutagen is a physical or chemical agent that changes the genetic material, usually DNA, of an organism and thus increases the frequency of mutations above the natural background level." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutagen)

Who said anything about genetic damage? Just (just?) changing body chemistry and functions of the current generation is what normal environmental variables like nearby predators in the water does to tadpoles, and a hormone-like effect is likely what Round-Up is having, too.

Too many conspiracy theories. Did Monsanto actually know that these results were going to appear in subsequent research? Now that they have surfaced, do we actually know what the outcomes are likely to be? If this product is, in fact, a threat to our environment, it should be prohibited as was DDT. But before we jump to the conclusion that there is a giant conspiracy at work here we need to learn more and confront the maker. You just might be surprised. But I am not holding my breath on this one either.

No conspiracy theories, whatsoever. Monsanto is the devil and should be dismantled with every single employee from the ceo to the lowest minion put in jail. Do a quick google search on "terminator seed", Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH) and don't forget Monsanto created Agent Orange. They know exactly what they're doing. Don't ever give these criminals the benefit of the doubt on ANYTHING. They make a conscious decision to either starve or poison millions of people every day for profits. And their lobbyists are THAT powerful, that they are allowed to continue with not so much as a slap on the wrist.
They put millions of farmers out of business throughout the world (driving many to suicide because they can't even feed their families) by forcing them to buy over-priced "Monsanto" seed which has a terminator gene. They poison millions of people everyday by convincing dairy farmers to give their livestock BGH (even though there was NEVER a milk shortage) which makes the cows hideously sick and deformed and infects the milk you drink with puss and infection because apparently the cancer causing hormone wasn't enough. And they hide the lab results and strong arm the media to NOT publish the story. But we live in the information age. One has to work really hard NOT to know about Monsanto.
Please do a google search on at least these two subjects (if inventing Agent Orange isn't enough for you)

The people who are getting rich off of Monsanto should be in jail.
I am happy to see this online newspaper taking on Monsanto....it is a non partisan problem!
But remember, it is not only Republicans who are making money off of Monsanto...Democrats, Independents and those who do not vote are making money off of Monsanto. Those who want population control..such as David Rockefeller and others who belong to the Trilateral Commission and CFR are also for population control.
Big Pharma is another group that are killing our babies. Killing our grand parents.
It seems almost everything today, that is profitable, that can be ingested, that is making people rich...is dangerous to humans and our animals.
Greed and lust are taking over our country and the world.
Good is bad. Bad is Good. Does that tell you anything?

I'm sure that amphibians aren't the only organism affected. We drink the water this witches brew is in and you can be sure that all of it is not removed in the purification process. The evidence is overwhelming that the greedy and dirty corporations, investors and their government enablers are behind the epidemic of soft tissue cancers and acquired immune system disorders. Recommend Dr. Mary's Monkey by Edward T. Haslam if you haven't read it.

Are they sure it was Roundup they tested? Sounds like it may have been Viagra!

Who is and has been the major investor in Monsanto? The Rockefeller Trusts & Foundations! Can we say Egenics (controlled genetics) as in what the Nazis tried to do?

At least now we have an explanation for all the big fat asses/tails in the US.
