"They are firing at demonstrators in alleyways and people are running for cover. Protesters have been trying to avoid heavy security in main streets," said one Derra resident. Security forces also made use of tear gas to disperse and suppress the crowd. Tensions are high after earlier on Friday a bomb exploded in a major oil pipeline in western Syria. Activists say that over 1,600 non judicial civilian deaths have occurred since march when a crackdown on anti President Bashar al-Assad protestors and activists began.
