New Study Affirms the Grim Role Played by US Guns in Mexican Violence
South of the border, war is raging with guns mostly supplied by merchants in the United States.
The Government of Mexico has estimated that almost 50,000 people have been killed since 2006, a toll that has made its top officials irate about the persistent flow of weapons south. Some law enforcement officials in the U.S. government share the Mexican’s concern, but their attempts to stanch the flow by obtaining better intelligence about it have badly singed their fingers.
The notorious “Fast and Furious” operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms — one in a string of attempts over a nearly decade-long period to tag and closely monitor the movement of individual arms — blew up when two of the weapons being tracked were used to kill a U.S. border patrol agent in 2010.
Republicans in Congress seized on the issue, holding multiple hearings last year. Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson was reassigned. The Phoenix U.S. attorney who oversaw the operation also resigned, and Republicans called for the resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder. And President Obama has been largely hands off on the gun issue, treating it as the political third rail that is best to be ignored, or at least carefully walked around.
Into this politically charged environment, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) released a first-of-its-kind report on Thursday that nonetheless attempts to assess the proportional distribution — if not the scope — of the arms flowing to drug cartel operatives.
It confirmed that a majority of the weapons being used by the Mexican drug cartels to kill police, criminals, and civilians alike have come from inside the United States. Precisely, of the 99,691 weapons traced from Mexico between 2007 and 2011, 68,161 were manufactured or imported from the U.S. — over 68 percent. Because the data only reflect arms that are captured by Mexican law enforcement agencies, they depict only a subset of all those that flow south.
The data also showed the U.S. arms’ contribution is becoming more malignant: Criminals using U.S. weapons have been moving from handguns to rifles with detachable magazines, weapons with far greater destructive ability in conflicts with government forces. The percentage of traced guns that were rifles went from 28.2 percent in 2007 to 43.3 percent in 2011, while the percentages for pistols, revolvers and shotguns declined.
The flow of U.S. weapons to foreign countries isn't constrained just to Mexico. Over the five years studied in the report, over 99 percent of the weapons seized for tracing in Canada, for example, were of U.S. origin. Of the five countries studied in the Caribbean for 2011 alone, the largest percentage of weapons with a U.S. origin came from The Bahamas (94 percent), followed by the Dominican Republic (81.3 percent), Jamaica (80.8 percent), Barbados (60 percent) and Trinidad and Tobago (43.3 percent); the majority of weapons seized for tracing were handguns.
But Mexico remains the more volatile situation. After all, there aren't civilians being gunned down in the streets of Vancouver. Some of the most powerful weapons to show up in Mexico were first imported in a stripped-down condition into the United States, and then modified by domestic gun dealers before being transported.
The data has been seized upon by advocates of stricter gun controls in the United States. In a press release, Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) said the new data "makes it very clear that we need to increase our efforts to starve the supply of American weapons that arm Mexico's brutal drug trafficking organizations." ATF was required to release the gun recovery data due to a provision authored by Feinstein as part of last year's Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations bill.
The reports form the most comprehensive long-term data available for guns that have been traced through ATF's National Tracing Center. A report done in 2009 by the Government Accountability Office found that 87 percent seized by Mexican authorities and traced over the previous five years were from the United States — a higher figure that suggests U.S. law enforcement efforts to root out trafficking may now be having a modest impact.
The National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action, a group funded partly by gun manufacturers, did not have an immediate comment.

The gun reports are all lies in that most of the US Guns the Mexican Terrorist have were supplied by the US Government to the Mexican Police who lost them in attacks (or corruption) to the drug cartels. About a year ago when asked to report the serial numbers of the US Guns for information to track them back, it was refused because they didn't want us to know the truth.
Again, it is not mostly regular US commercial guns being sold to Mexico it is guns provided by our government to the Mexican Authorities who had them taken away by the drug cartels. This entire thing is a political scam to justify disarming Americans for a Obama led Marxist Communist takeover of our country.
The purpose of the 2nd Amendment was to allow American Citizens to protect themselves 'from the government'; and that right must be preserved or all freedom will be lost.

I don't know what the posters here read, but for me, it is about 50,000 fellow human being killed as unfortunate collateral damage, the general cost of business, because We, the people are on board with this 'War on Drugs'. By our actions & inactions do we reveal our real selves, our souls.
Our collective power accepts these numbers as natural, because they're Mexicans. In today’s psyche anything in the browns is fair game for dehumanizing to a thing, to use or not use, truly unimportant, of no concern.
That’s Ok! by me, because till We, the people realize that this ‘market’, us, which is big enough for the our Government & Mexico, and Columbia et al and the ‘entrepreneurs’ as in job creators of the world, criminal & legit, to jump in on. And the arms dealers, haulers, again et al. for fun & profit.
Is financially worth legalizing for regulation & taxation, even as a mere health & safety issue, take all the thrill out of the game. Save a hell of a lot of human tragedy & misery, and a life or few. The ripples go on forever.
That could be done and have nothing to do with gun control. The guns already in Mexico will still be there and I’m sure someone will find a use for so much firepower, but that’s another day’s matter. It still is better to end the ‘War on Drugs’, this war on ourselves, the cost has been life, liberty & freedom, or haven’t you noticed. You didn’t know?
(Don’t know about the brown tone thing though, a lot more issues around that one. But We, the people got hope, yeah we does.)
Tis the time for all good men & women, boys & girls to come to the aid of their country…Our America, WE, the people! Everyone of us is in on this, like it or not.
God don't bless America! WE, the people ... DO!

Sault, I am totally amazed you can manage to turn your computer on, let alone type! Illegal gun and weapon trafficking to other countries IS A SEPARATE ISSUE from your stupid sacred "gun right"! This issue has nothing to do with you owning your stupid gun! Can you try to focus a bit?
Of course, if you are one of the thousands of stupid Americans who are selling guns and other weapons to the Mexican drug cartel, then I can see why you reacted so violently and stupidly to this article.

Dear gun freaks, I know that as soon as you see something about "guns" in the title of an article that is not authored by the NRA, your brain automatically implodes. However, please explain how this article is "propaganda" and for what exactly? This article has links to the source of the date, like the ATF--here: http://www.atf.gov/statistics/download/trace-data/international/2007-201...
I know you are so infatuated with your stupid guns you can't see straight, but try to focus for a second. This article has absolutely NOTHING to do with YOU or your stupid gun, unless of course, you are one of the thousands of Americans who illegally traffics your guns and riffles to the Mexican drug cartel. Focus for a minute--not everything discussed about U.S. guns is about you!

Wow! Gun nuts really have small brains!! This is NOT about your stupid "gun rights"!! This is about OUR STUPID GUNS BEING SOLD TO THE DRUG CARTEL IN MEXICO!
You like your guns stupid guns so much, then try keeping here in the U.S.!
Your fake "information" on guns and violence is patently incorrect. Our own CIA reports that the U.S. rates among the highest of developed nations when it comes to gun violence and deaths. You can pretend the fake information given to you by the NRA is correct, but all credible data available proves the opposite. Guns foster violence, their presence increase the severity of violence against others, and exponentially increases the incidences of homicides, and accidental shootings.
You want to keep your guns, go ahead, but don't try to shove them down everyone's throats--we aren't all idiots in this country.

Well said, PRICELESS22! This propaganda article is full of lies, like that "Obama is mostly hands-off this third rail issue" when he was behind fast & furious in order to magnify the "problem" in order to use it as an excuse to take away the American citizens second amendment rights forever!

How wrong you are. Stop with the NRA propaganda. Nobody is taking away guns from people. Common sense laws need to be in place to keep guns out of the wrong hands. Like stopping the gun show loop hole, limits on handgun purchases at a time, ban assault weapons again, make people report stolen guns with in 24 hrs. These are just common sense things to do and do not impinge on the rights of law abiding people, hunters and collectors.

This is the same propaganda that was put out in 2008!
Most of the guns seized in Mexico come from OTHER countries...not the US.
Russian, Chinese, Iranian and South American guns are seized way more than USA made guns.
This is propaganda to demand gun control.
If you know your history and your news.... the countries who have banned guns..only the criminals have guns. In Switzerland, it is demanded that you have guns in your home. How much crime do they have?
When they first banned gun ownership in Australia...it was the Elderly that were murdered in unbelievable numbers!
If you check the statistics in the USA...the cities and counties that do not ban guns but expect you to have them...their crime rates are very, very low. The criminals know the populace own guns and they stay away from them!
It is common sense. But there is not much of that in the USA anymore.
Much more corruption, greed, and lust. Sounds like the devil is dancing in the streets!
Let's keep spreading those lies. If you tell a lie enough times..people believe it is truth. Another name for it....brainwashing! Ask Marx, ask Saul Alinsky, ask Cloward and Piven...they used this tactic and left books for those who want to use those tactics today. And believe me...they are being used right here in the good ole' USA!

What kind of garbage are you trafficking in? I've never seen so many lies packed into as few sentences as this burst of NRA propaganda reiterated for the mush-brained masses by FOX News, Glenn Beck and that ilk.
FYI, few liberals even know who this "Alinsky" character is, with fewer still actually acting out on whatever it is he says ....has said in the past. Is he dead, wingnuts? Because you seem to know more about him than any of us do.
Here's a little exercise for you. Go look at the violent crime stats for places where guns are sold freely. Check out Arizona and places where wingnuttery is rampant. Then get back to us when you find one whose crime rate is lower than the national average.
And now that we wont be hearing back from you any time soon, here's a reading assignment you can do in the meantime (to do during those few brief moments when you're not "jakking it" to pictures of your favorite guns, of course) ----
Using Google Scholar to weed out most of the wingnut attempts to think about things besides guns and gays, look up studies regarding the psych profile of people most attracted to conservative politics and social beliefs. Here's one to get you started: "It appears that conservatism has pathological dimensions manifested in violence and distorted psycho-sexual development" (Boshier, 1983, p. 159). This is supported by a study conducted by Walker, Rowe, and Quincey (1993) in which there was a direct correlation between authoritarianism and sexually aggressive behavior. An investigation done by Muehlenhard (1988) revealed that rape justification and aggression toward subordinate individuals was much higher in traditional (conservative personality) than non-traditional personalities. "
And of course it doesn't need to be said because it's blatantly obvious to everyone else, but for the sake of rubbing it in, how about this little gem: "Conservatism is not the doctrine of the intellectual elite or of the more intelligent segments of the population, but the reverse. By every measure available to us, conservative beliefs are found most frequently among the uninformed, the poorly educated, and the less intelligent" (McClosky, H., Conservatism and Personality. American Political Science Review, 52, 27-45. ).
