Yesterday, President Obama issued a first-ever statement in support of a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’sCitizens United ruling. During an "Ask Me Anything" conversation with the general public on the website Reddit (a session that has garnered a record-breaking 4 million views for the social news website and inspired 25,000 people to register to vote, according to the Los Angeles Times), participant Suzanne Merkelson asked: “What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?”  The president responded:

Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens ... Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight on the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change.

President Obama’s statement marks an important new milestone in the growing movement to reclaim our democracy. In just two and a half years, this movement has defied the skeptics who said Washington would never pay attention to a call for a constitutional amendment to overrule the Supreme Court. Millions of Americans across the political spectrum have demonstrated that their voices will be heard on this critical question of our time.

Our democracy is in crisis. We will either continue down the road toward a plutocracy or we will restore the fundamental promise of government of, for, and by the people. We should all look forward to the president taking further action in support of the call for this constitutional amendment. We should also urge all presidential and congressional candidates in this election to join this call.  At this crucial moment in our history, we must use the power we have to preserve our republic.

Citizens United: Bad Tax

Citizens United: Bad

Tax the Rich over the Fiscal Cliff: Good

All president Obama has to do

All president Obama has to do at the democratic convention to get all the votes he needs to win is to rally up the anger of Americans who have been had by a corrupt government. To share his vision for how he will defeat Citizens United, promise us Campaign Reform and actively pursue it, and trust his gut feeling that this is
"the right thing to do".
I'll be waiting!

Question for Romney: If

Question for Romney: If corporations are people, what's their unemployment rate?

If you really want to stop

If you really want to stop the sort of nonsense that makes for the "legal fiction" (i.e: LIE) "of the Corporate Person," (much less the "money = free speech" meme nonsense, as was demonstrated in the Citizens United decision) simply pass a law that re-states the basics: That ONLY individual human citizens should ever have rights, and that all mere groups (of individuals) should be at most assigned some temporary, revokable privileges!

Citizen's United v Citizen's

Citizen's United v Citizen's United. How can any future American, if we survive these days, look back upon these times without exclaiming WTF.

Citizen's United effectively

Citizen's United effectively circumvents the democratic ideal of government of the people, by the people, etc. It has placed America up for sale to the highest bidder. Throughout our history we have operated very well with the Supreme Court being the final legal resort in the land. Now that we have been shown just how blind blind justice can really be in the hands of Rightist zealots, perhaps it's time for Congress to exercise it's Judicial Review on the Judiciary. Flagrant misuse of office is actionable in other areas of government, why not here?

Perhaps we should try a new

Perhaps we should try a new approach. Have Obama turn over his political war chest to the governors of 15 swing states, and they use it to hire more teachers this year. Challenge Romney to give his war chest to the causes he thinks most deserve support. Maybe that would get some of the cash out of politics and into areas where it is needed.

If you challenged Willard to

If you challenged Willard to "give his war chest to the causes he things most deserve it," he'd donate the money to his election campaign. I'm sure he would feel that was a cause most deserving of his support. Besides, if he couldn't do that, he'd simply donate the war chest to his retirement fund, or something equally self-centered.

No, I don't that would work. Not without further stipulations on your part.

Democrats should quit

Democrats should quit slamming Citizens United vs FEC and start doing something to end it.
Criminally Indict and Impeach Clarence Thomas for falsifying his financial disclosure forms repeatedly deliberately omitting his wife's teabbging lobbyist Kochroach obscene income and for perjuring himself to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearings about his sexual predatory behavior at EEOC toward Anita Hill and other women.
Impeach John Roberts for perjuring himself to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearings about his intention to be an activist "judge".
Pass legislation requiring the identities of political campaign contributors to be made public.
Pass a Constitutional Amendment nullifying Citizens United.
Pass legislation nullifying Citizens United.
Impeach Samuel Alito for being incompetent and corrupt.
Impeach Anthony Kennedy for being incompetent and corrupt.
Get off your worthless asses and do whatever it takes to end Citizens United and end the corruiptr careers of those who made it happen.

Mr. Hill, You are so right!

Mr. Hill, You are so right! Now, get some others on the band wagon. If we don't do something firm and drastic it will be done to us in the form of no rights at all. Our forefathers would not have put up with this b.s. and we have for long enough. These supreme court jesters are un-American and should be jailed. America has not been attacked with near this destruction since Pearl Harbor. America, stand up for our rights and fight this injustice.

7 Compelling Reasons Why You Should Support NationofChange

Our readers often tell us why they’ve decided to step up and become supporters. Here are some of the top reasons people are giving.

1. You’re keeping independent journalism alive
The corporate owned media has proven that it can’t be trusted. In a media landscape wrought with spin and corruption, NationofChange stands in very scarce company.

2. You’re sticking it to the rich, powerful, and corrupt
When you have money in this country you can get away with damn near anything, and they do. NationofChange isn’t afraid to expose these criminals no matter how powerful they are.

3. Your donation is 100% tax-deductible
NationofChange is a 501(c)3 charity. People tend to assume that many other organizations are (most nonprofits are NOT) but it’s that 501(c)3 status is a bit more rare than you think.
