Occupy Our Consciences
Everyone on the left side of American politics, from the near end to the far end, has advice for Occupy Wall Street. I’m no exception. But it’s useful to acknowledge first that this movement has accomplished things that the more established left didn’t.
The problems of growing economic inequality and abuses by the masters of the financial world have been in the background for years. Many progressives longed to make them central political questions.
Occupy realized that the old approaches hadn’t worked. So it provided the media with a committed group of activists to cover, a good story line and excellent pictures. Paradoxically, its unconventional approach fit nicely with current media conventions. And its indifference to immediate political concerns gave the movement a freedom of action that others on the left did not have.
The breakup of some of Occupy’s encampments signals a new phase for the movement. This does not have to mean its end. On the contrary, it is an opportunity.
Let’s first dispense with a kind of narcissism that exists among Americans who lived through the 1960s and insist on seeing Occupy as nothing more than a rerun of the battles over Vietnam, Richard Nixon and the counterculture.
This frame is convenient to conservatives who hope to drive a wedge between working-class voters and the occupiers, much as Nixon brilliantly played construction workers against privileged hippies. That’s the theme of an outrageous advertisement assailing Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren by Crossroads GPS, the group associated with Karl Rove. It accuses Warren, a Democrat, of siding with occupiers who “attack police, do drugs and trash public parks.”
Notice that this is an effort to bury the movement’s apt criticisms of the financial system beneath a pile of stereotypes. The Massachusetts Republican Party is reinforcing the message with regular “Occupy Wall Street Incident Reports” about anything bad that happens at demonstrations around the country. They run under a logo casting Warren as the “Matriarch of Mayhem,” in honor of her statement that she had created “much of the intellectual foundation” for the new movement.
To her credit, Warren has not backed off her support for the movement’s core ideas or goals. She has, however, emphasized that the demonstrators should obey the law.
That is good advice — as a general matter and as a political matter. If the occupiers need to battle right-wing efforts to turn them into Abbie Hoffmans and Jerry Rubins (whom many occupiers have never heard of), they also need to resist a lefty sort of nostalgia.
It’s not the ’60s anymore. The protests of that era were rooted in affluence. Too often in those years, the left cut itself off from the concerns of the white working class and disdained its values. That’s the history the right wants to revive. In fact, the Occupy demonstrations are precisely about the concerns of Americans who have been sidelined economically. This is why polls show broad support for Occupy’s objectives of greater economic equality and more financial accountability.
Thus the question going forward: Will the Occupy movement play into the hands of its enemies by living up to the stereotypes they are trying to create? Or will it instead move to a phase that builds on its success?
Ongoing violent demonstrations will simply not help the cause, and the Martin Luther King Jr.’s lessons on nonviolence are useful here. Thismovement is about something much bigger than “occupying” a particular space. Occupations proved to be a shrewd tactic. They are not a cause or an end in themselves. Focusing on holding a piece of public land simply makes the movement a hostage to the decisions of local officials, some of whom will inevitably be hostile to its purposes.
More important, the movement should remind itself of its greatest innovation, its slogan: “We are the 99 percent.” This is an affirmation that it is trying to speak for nearly everybody. Its tactics should live up to this aspiration by building support among the vast number of Americans who will never show up at the encampments. It should also want to help political figures such as Warren, who understood far earlier than most the costs of inequality and of the abuses of financial power. The last thing this movement should want to do is create fodder for the ads and e-mails propagated by Warren’s foes.
The occupations have done their work. Now it’s time to occupy the majority.

A reality check on this thorey is that this is not possible in a physical world as we know it with the current spiritual attitudes that exist. To rise up and to meet Him in the air suggests a transformation from pysical to spiritual in a cataclysmic event as suggested in Peter 2:3. It has always seemed hypocritical to me to claim and stand for the right to life when the bible clearly indicates that it is a gift from God and He clearly advocated and took away many lives in the testimony of the old testament. When John the baptist rebuked the Pharisees and the Saducees he very clearly stated that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham Math. 3: 9( great argument for evolution ). The entire scriptures and word of God was written to not only allow mankind to live as a physical being but to ensure that we would have a life of Quality. Obedience to God's laws is essential to accomplish that but even He has prophesies to reduce the poulation of this world to one Quarter of it's size at the time of His coming. The seperation of the wheat from the tares is a culling of evil spirits from the world that hopefully will free us from the domination of tyrants and hopefully make equitable and just government possible.
Thank you for that succinct and clear smumary of the Christian perspective on worly politics. I was once very much into wordly politics especially left-wing ideology socialism-cum-communism, Marxism-Leninism, an admired of the Soviet Union, etc., Yes even called Jesus Christ a communist, a fellow-traveller, you might say. But somehow and here's some trick could justify in my own mind revolutionary justice , defend the existence of the Berlin Wall, excused the excesses now there's an understatement if ever there was one, of Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot and all the other friends of the oppressed , working class, even fooling myself that within the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc the working people had equal access with their leaders to doctors, hospitals, goods of various kinds and whatever else was available. But God opened my eyes, my mind and my heart to the awful reality of that false gospel and indeed to the foolishness in thinking that worldly politics can ever liberate mankind. Only the soon-coming Kingdom of God will provide right government where peace, justice, freedom from want, an absence of crime, good health and the spirit of love and joy will be the norm. And the joyful upcoming Holy Days the Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day will be upon us where we get a fortatste of what is to come.

There is more going on at these sites than simple protests. There is a vast social education going on that perhaps has never been seen before. It brings together people who would never have met one another otherwise. Of all the victories the Occupy can justifiably point to, I hope this would be one of the major ones. May God bless us all, and, grant us complete success.

I suggest EJ follow his own advise. And that is to not try to "advise" OWS.
This movement is growing because it is inclusive, and focuses on a broad topic which brings all elements of the 99% together. That topic is, as EJ said:
"...for Occupy’s objectives of greater economic equality and more financial accountability"
Even the tea baggers can get on board with that one, and we need exactly that kind of inclusiveness.
This occupy movement is a discovery in motion. It is a horizontal true democracy in action.
It is a thing of great beauty and awesome power.
Let's rock and roll.

If Elizabeth Warren can't get elected in Massachusetts, maybe we should just pack up and move to ....... where????

RE: Occupy
The best policy is literally laissez faire. Let democracy run wild and free.

WHAT HAS AMERICA BECOME ?!! 1936 GERMANY?!!?
OWS / 99%, FIGHT BACK !! JOIN THE OWS / 99% “BLACK FRIDAY BOYCOTT.”
OWS and the 99% have the Power! “BUYING POWER.” It’s about time we used it. WE CAN INSTANTLY STOP THE FLOW OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS.
Here’s how.
WE’RE NOT BUYING ON BLACK FRIDAY.
STRANGLE THE COMPANIES THAT ARE STRANGLING US!
Companies want our money, but they don’t want to help America get back on its feet?
We are being starved, now let’s starve those greedy corporations who took our money.
We want companies to hire us, politicians to vote for us, and this is how to force it.
We have an incredible mobile army of millions and millions and millions of people!
Let’s combine the power that we all have. VOTE, by NOT spending.
Stop buying as much as you can. Stop buying from ALL of the big corporations, retailers and banks; Wal-Mart, Walgreen’s, CVS, Rite Aid, Kroger, Costco, Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, Sears, Lowe’s, Supervalu, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Georgia Pacific, RJR, Brown & Williamson, Kraft Global, Sara Lee, Tyson, BP, Shell Oil, Exxon Mobile, Hewlett-Packard, AT&T, Sprint, Dell, Microsoft, Dow Chemical, Chevron, Kimberly-Clark, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, J.P. Don’t use your credit cards or ATM’s…at all.
Don’t shop any retail chain stores. Shop local, or mom and pop shops.
Don’t buy gasoline. Walk, take a bus, car pool, or ride a bike.
Don’t buy any extras like music, movies, electronics, or toys…nothing.
BUY AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE, FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.
STOP SPENDING OUR BILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND WATCH WHAT HAPPENS.
Greedy global companies will be shocked and not know what to do.
Wall Street, the oil barons, corporate fat cats, stockholders, executives, marketers, retailers, politicians, and President Obama, will be asking us, the 99%, what we want!
“WE” WILL FORCE WALL STREET AND CORPORATIONS TO HELP AMERICA!
We have already started.

THE NEW AMERICAN PIRATES, ARE KILLING AMERICANS.
This is not about glamorized or fictional piracy. This is, “real piracy.”
Hundreds of our wealthiest leaders and most powerful corporations know that in the next few years, they will be able to siphon, skim, and steal, so much “NEW CASH,” that they and their progeny will be ultra-rich for generations to come.
No, this is not funny, or fiction, or a conspiracy, it is just simple greed and simple theft.
The new pirates of America have launched an all-out siege on us in order to capture, amass, and hold trillions of dollars for themselves.
All of the recent political power grabs and nonsensical debating is purely a slight-of-hand deflection. President Obama, Democrats, Republicans, the International Press, and even the Tea Party, are watching the tiny pea in the shell game…while the rich and powerful “Piratical Right” is stealing America right out from under us.
Consider that their combined total plunder from corporate flipping, downsizing, offshore labor, speculation, price fixing of oil and energy plus, corruption in defense, healthcare, banking, student loans, foreclosures, etc., etc., is a trillion dollar treasure for these pirates.
Go ahead, put your own calculator to it.
Are they smarter than we are? Yes, and they are laughing at us. I, we, you, and all of us, have not been able see the big picture of what is happening to our own country and to our own people. The rape and theft of America, has been cleverly packaged, promoted, and sold under the guise of “cost-cutting,” “deregulation,” and “free enterprise.”
The “Piratical Right” is directly responsible for millions of people dying, getting sick, losing their jobs and homes, losing their ability to fight, their spirit, and even losing their will to live. The sick smell of this carnage now permeates the air across America.
To us, this is all unimaginable, because we look for some sense or the morality of things. These modern-day American pirates however, have no moral compass. They are devoid of any conscience, humanity or soul, and are feeding on the flesh of the American people.
Don’t look to the President, the Senate, Congress, the press, or any political party to help. Sadly, they just don’t see it, don’t care, or are part of it. “We the people” are on our own. Start asking questions. Demand answers. If we don’t fight back America…who will?
History has taught us how to stop piracy.

You are doing OK, bionicknight, down to the next to last paragraph. Protest is fine for getting attention, but for any progress to be made, it has to translate into political power. "We the people" are not on our own. There are Members of Congress who agree with us and even some corporations. I grant you that the numbers in Congress are declining, but that is largely due to "we the people" being asleep at the switch. Who do you think puts these idiots in office? To make any progress, we need to identify our current supporters and back them up when they take action we agree with. Then, we need to identify people who share our views and guarantee them our continued support after they are elected. Just saying the President, Congress, the press, and any political party don't care and aren't going to help is false and counter-productive. It's so clearly the easy way out of having to think and do something.
