Romney Says America Doesn’t Need ‘More Firemen, More Policemen, More Teachers’
The last three years are the worst on record for public sector job loss, and the 700,000 government jobs that no longer exist remain a large drag on the American economy.
Today, New Jersey Gov. and Mitt Romney campaign surrogate Chris Christie (R) said that those losses meant the country was moving in “the right direction,” and Romney himself backed that statement up later, criticizing President Obama for calling for the hiring of more teachers, the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent reports. From CNN’s report of the Romney event:
Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”
State and local governments have been forced to layoff mass amounts of teachers, firefighters, and police officers because budget crunches have led to school closures and the elimination of public safety departments. That has hurt the unemployment situation (which Romney also criticizes), considering the unemployment rate would be a full point lower without the 700,000 layoffs.
Romney’s honesty isn’t a new position for him or the GOP — he’s called for more government layoffs since the beginning of his campaign. But it’s yet another indication that Romney is more interested in continuing the GOP’s ideological battle against government instead of curing the ills that are plaguing the American economy.

This is how Romney’s going to shrink government, the Paul Ryan budget: Medicare is a great part of govt. Let’s close down Medicare. Fifty million seniors without health care? Go buy it in the free market. Can’t afford it? Not the government’s fault, besides, serves ‘em right for not making money for your retirement like I did. Social Security takes a big chunk of govt. Close SS. Millions of homeless seniors begging for food? Just look the other way. The Department of Education’s taking us to the poorhouse. Eliminate the DE. Have people hire their own teachers. Can’t afford it? 40 million illiterates aren’t going to sink the nation. Let’s keep shrinking govt by closing the EPA. Tell Big Oil: Dig baby, dig. Disasters like the Gulf of Mexico oil spill? Well, you can’t win ‘em all. I’ll cut from all sides: Eliminate food stamps, Medicaid, SEC, Banking Commission, let it all go to dog-eat-dog. Been taken to the cleaners by a scam artist? Serves you right for being a sucker. You’ve got to let people make their millions anyway they can. From now on Ponzi schemes are legal. Regulations are ruining the nation.

One wonders if the life-long Republicans are incapable of seeing these points or if they just automatically stop reading when they realize there will be criticism of their chosen political fraternity. Dems seem to be willing to argue about things but Repubs seem dead set on not thinking along new lines, not thinking about historical references and not caring about anyone outside their immediate family. I keep hearing that the poor are crap out of luck, it's God's will or maybe they are just stupid. Then we get the Social Darwinism crowd who clearly never actually read Origin of Species. They accuse the left of pseudo science and then dig out slogans from the fascists in Germany and Italy to justify their disregard for others. It amounts to a simple paradigm: we help others because it's the right thing to do and overall things work better if we cooperate. The alternative, the New American Century view, is: we're in it for ourselves, everybody else can roll over and die and should do so to make it easier on our military budget. But either the Constitution is the legal paper which defines our nation or it's a quaint piece of parchment with no legal meaning, as Donald Rumsfeld said. Some folks are just dead set on finding ways around laws. They added sub-paragraphs and add-ons to the 10 Commandments so that they can in fact murder and steal and lie and still be God's chosen. I feel like we're all living in Animal Farm and still walking around on four legs. But I hear they want to burn all copies of Animal Farm because it's anti-American...

The depression was not a bad economic time for everyone. It was the time of the greatest transfer of assets in the 20th century and the 1% would fare very well with another. They are not stupid people or ignorant of history.
The Republican attempt to balance the budget in the early 30's is what turned the Recession of '29 into the Great Depression and they remain on target for a repeat.

Maybe all the police should refuse to work at his next event since we don't need them. I don't know how laying off millions of people is creating jobs. Wisconsin did NOT vote for those layoffs there were just too many that didn't believe in recalls.

Only an A like him would say America doesn't need better education and improved safety. I guess he is a stand your ground kind of guy. Shoot first and think later!!!

"The last three years are the worst on record for public sector job loss, and the 700,000 government jobs that no longer exist remain a large drag on the American economy."
So we want to get rid of the nasty and evil government workers, but then not hire them in the private sector? How does that "help America?"
If corporations and conservatives think that unemploying government workers is the answer, then they better damn well start hiring all the people who want to work.
Face it. The private sector cannot generate enough jobs for everyone.

Romney claims he wants to "help the American people." Evidently, government employees do not qualify as "American people." Except, of course, in the world of politics, where politicians, who are nothing more than glorified and pampered "public servants," do NOT constitute the title of "government employees." GOP leaders are constantly yammering about "too much government in our lives" yet who do "they" work for...yeah, the damn government. Every "freebie" should be excised from these people's "benefits." They want less government...fine. NO health insurance for them or their families, NO limousine service, NO "free" gas, lunches, dinners, call girls (or boys), NO using tax dollars for "seminars" in the Bahamas or Bermuda or wherever...in essence, let the bastards pay for everything they expect any other American citizen to pay for. ALL of them...Republicans and Democrats alike. Then we can take the savings and HIRE back some teachers, policeman and fireman, amongst others who performed "public" duties and then spent their paychecks reinforcing the stinking Capitalist system that allegedly is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Romney is the only presidential candidate worse than Obama.
They both SUCK!

Too bad that Ralph Nader isn't running again. He did us all a huge favor in 2000 by knocking "Owl Whore" out of the box in Florida.

The only thing Romney seems to know about America is it has tits for rich and the parasites to suck on. Does not know how to keep the tits producing milk in a sustainable way. That milk is dried out and Romney/buddies live off borrowed milk but seems to favor starving the cow if elected. We need to kneed the GOP into something more useful....

The GOP acts as if those people losing their government jobs aren't losing "real" jobs.

Every lay-off without a corresponding new job hurts the people. When money is missing fro theh ome budget, it is money not spent on thngs. Sometimes those things are necessities, sometimes they are discretionary. In either cae, someone else then is being shorted. It is rolling thunder. It can turn into a tidal wave, affecting people who now have good jobs. Why the gop and tea baggers refuse to face the fact is a mystery. However, a fact it is. When people are assured that they will have a steady income, they spend willingly. When they are in doubt, they cut back. So, we have those who have lost income cutting down ontheir spending. We have those who are wary cutting down on their spending. Whee does that leave the economy, in the toilet.

Do yourself a favor and look up Sociopath, then think of the last few presidents, decide who qualifies. Then apply the term to corporations, because as you know in our country, corporations are people. Start with the shining lights of corporate responsibility, BP, Monsanto, Carlyle Group, and others. Now try and apply sociopath to the Tea Party. Even more fun, try to find a corporation that does not test positive for Socipathy. They are there, but very tenuously, see how quickly Fiorina and Whitman destroyed HP.
