Right now, the American people are like frogs in warm sequester water.  For some, inundated with all the corporate media talk about out-of-control spending, the cuts to the deficit feel good right now. But as the sequester takes hold and federal spending is pulled from the economy, those views are likely to change.

US elected officials seem to be focused primarily on making sure the other party is to blame, when in fact both are to blame, and on measuring the political fallout.  In many ways, this is part of the battle to determine which arm of the corporate duopoly will have a majority in Congress after the 2014 year elections.

But for the rest of us, a large spending cutback by government in the midst of a jobs crisis and shrinking GDP is exactly the wrong policy for the economy.  The US economy is likely to find itself in a recession, shedding more jobs in 2013 with an increased deficit to GDP level in part because of the sequester, but also because the federal government was already in austerity, shrinking at a very fast rate (despite what the corporate media, pundits and politicians say). Thus the road to a double-dip recession has sped up due to the sequestration. Here are some facts you should know.
In fact, Zero Hedge published a disconcerting list of twelve recent events that show the next economic collapse may almost be upon us. And, they point out that the sequester will make things worse.  Less money in the economy when big business is not spending is a sure sign of economic disaster, potentially even deflation which could lead to worse than a recession.

Federal Government Spending Percentage Change

The sequester will cut $85 billion in government spending from March 1 to September 30. It is a 5% cut for most federal spending, but because the fiscal year began on October 1, 2012, five months have already passed and thus the one year cut is jammed into 7 months. Some agencies, like those providing unemployment benefits have been unable to prepare so there are likely to be 10% or so cuts in checks to the unemployed. Other agencies have been able to prepare somewhat by not filling vacancies and taking other budgetary actions since last October. And others, which give out grants for research, will be giving out fewer funds in grants.  How the sequester will impact agencies will vary from program to program.

It will also vary from state to state. States like, Virginia, New Mexico, Alabama and South Carolina, with high federal spending will face more severe cutbacks, while states like, New York, Ohio, Illinois and Oregon, with less federal spending will face less. But there will be budgetary pain all across the nationin health care, housing, education, security and immigration, among others.

The sequester does not seem to bother Wall Street, as the stock market approaches record highs, but then Wall Street has always desired cuts rather than the kinds of job program spending that the economy needs. Big business made its money in large part by increasing production and shrinking wages.  A hungry, desperate unemployed and underemployed work force is good news for them – and that is very likely what the sequester will produce. (But check #1 on this list of 12 recent events. It may be the Wall Sreet bubble is about to burst.)

In fact, probably the best comment on the sequester came from Chris Hayes who pointed out that if the White House and Congress really want to scare themselves, the next threat should be a trillion dollar spending program, half to create government jobs and half to pay-off peoples debts!

Here's what Obama is saying to the wealthy elite: "Look, I'm doing all I can to continue the transfer of wealth from the many to you. Try to remember that it has been going full tilt since 1981, and sometimes we have to ease off the gas pedal just a bit. Two thirds of the huge tax cuts you got from Reagan are still in force, the minimum wage adjusted for inflation is far lower than it was in 1968, I've kept the war in Afghanistan going for 5 years and counting, I've given the health insurance cartel a mega-monopoly that fends off Medicare For All and keeps the door open to further Medicare privatization, I've made sure no beneficiaries of the banking cartel got prosecuted or fined more than half the profits they derived from any fraud, I've made sure your offshored trillions remain tax-free and under the radar, I'm pushing another free-trade deal worth trillions to you, I've got Dem congressmen behind more cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid without a counter-demand to lift the ceiling on witholding -- which is worth billions to you all -- and I've got most of America believing I'm on the side of the little people even as their share of wealth approaches zero. And as you know, that ain't half of it. A huge chunk of federal spending including interest on the debt is going to your pockets, we're saving you hundreds of billions in corporate taxes, and we're on track to keep our cannon fodder behind us for more war in the Middle East and new war in Africa. But look, to keep this con game going until we can re-legalize slavery and purge resistors in the USA, you have to give me a few crumbs to appease them. Homeland Security and CIA are telling me that corporate media need more window-dressing, as the gun-control distraction is getting old. A little increase in the minimum wage. Something for educators while we get our ducks in a row for privatization. Some peanuts for alternative energy while we ramp up the drilling and fracking and finish the pipeline to Houston, so Big Oil can refine the tar-sand oil and ship it overseas for a guaranteed profit. Sure, our sequestor gig is going fine so far. We got 'em more confused than ever. But I need just a couple appeasements to keep the sheep moving along the chute to the slaughterhouse. Like I tell them, the wealthy are doing just fine and can afford a little more. In other words, give me a few crumbs, so I can keep most of the loaf coming to you."

As unfortunate as it may be, neither the Democran's nor Republicrate's have a clue about what to do. They are more clueless than you, me, and the rest of of our once great Country, combined. The GOP has forced a sequestering/castration situation whereby they throw stones, but yet, have no wise solutions. The DFL focuses upon the stones and therefore can't bring to focus something that might be helpful in getting ALL of us out of this morass of a mess.

The GOP is filled with the children, who in school, created a big stink about some irreverent drivel, and the DFL, like a lap dog, sought/seeks to slather with wet tongue, a solution that results in a circular, nonsensical, visionless, assuaging of the "sore," with no defined solution. Both are a joke and a clueless farce upon this once powerful Nation.

This Country needs new and true leadership and most unfortunately, the helm is being controlled by the infants trapped within the asylum.

The word has been that the sequester would not be felt for some time, but in my own family my cousin was put on furlough immediately (an engineer on nuclear projects) and my husband (a trainer in procurement and other systems) saw his schedule wiped out on March 5.

Thanks a lot, Republicans! With each cut, thousands of citizens (read, customers) are no longer spending, saving, or doing anything to boost the economy. In at least one case I'm close to, this will probably result in another foreclosure.

The deficit was coming down, employment was going up, housing was creeping up. Did Obama not shout it loudly enough? Ed Shultz (MSNBC) said that only 6% of Americans were aware that the deficit was no longer climbing! It seems the Republicans depend on an uninformed populace.
