Something Big Is Happening: Occupy Together

Article image

To paraphrase one of Bob Dylan's songs of youthful protest, "Something's happening here, and you don't know what it is, do you Ms. Bellafante?"

A New York Times writer, Ginia Bellafante, is but one of many establishment reporters and pundits who've been covering the fledgling "Occupy Wall Street " movement — but completely missing the story. Instead of really digging into what's "happening here," they've resorted to fuddy-duddy mockery of an important populist protest that has sprouted right in Wall Street's own neighborhood.

In a September article, Bellafante dismissed the young people's effort as "fractured and airy," calling it a "carnival" in an "intellectual vacuum." Their cause is so "diffuse and leaderless," she wrote, that its purpose is "virtually impossible to decipher." No wonder, she concluded, that participation in the movement is "dwindling."

Whew — so snide! Yet, so wrong.

While the establishment is befuddled by the plethora of issues and slogans within the protest, confused by the absence of hierarchical order and put off by its festive spirit, that's their problem. The 20- and 30-somethings who are driving this movement know what they're doing and are far more organized (but much differently organized) than their snarky critics seem able to comprehend.

It's silly to say that the protestors' purpose is indecipherable. Hello — they're encamped next door to Wall Street. Isn't that a clue? Their cause is the same as the one boiling in the guts of America's workaday majority: Stop the gross greed of financial and corporate elites, and expel a political class that's so corrupted by the money of those wealthy elites that it has turned its back on the middle class and the poor.

Such movements don't begin with a neat set of solutions pre-packaged for The New York Times, but with roiling outrage focused directly on the plutocratic perpetrators of an unjust economy and an unresponsive politics. The movement will find agreement in due time on specific ideas for stopping the injustice, but now is the time for the passion and creative, nonviolent confrontation that will energize others to stop moaning and join the rebellion.

Millions of people are mad as hell and yearning for some leadership to battle the bastards. They're experiencing the truth of the old Ray Charles song: "Them that's got is them that gets, and I ain't got nothin' yet."

A majority of folks now see that "them that's got" are not only getting theirs, but also getting ours. The wealthiest 1 percent of Americans possess more net worth today than the bottom 90 percent of us combined. Worse, these privileged few and their political henchmen have structured a new economic "normal" of long-term joblessness, low wages, no benefits or worker rights, miserly public services, and a steadily widening chasm between the rich and the rest of us.

This is the alienating reality that "Occupy Wall Street" has arisen to confront. This burgeoning movement began in September, when fewer than a dozen college students pitched camp in Liberty Square, located in the heart of New York's financial district, and began daily peaceful marches down Wall Street.

This is not your grandfather's tightly organized protest. In fact, it's intentionally loose — there is no "leader" or leadership council. Instead, group decisions are reached through a consensus-based democratic process. With no faith in traditional politics or conventional media, the mostly young protestors have taken to the streets to make their points, using their well-honed "culture of the web" to organize, strategize, harmonize and mobilize.

Their Liberty Square encampment might look chaotic at first, but look again. It includes a medial clinic, media center, cafeteria and library. Food? Their widely viewed website lets anyone in the world go online and have pizzas delivered to them from a local shop. They even produce their own newspaper, appropriately named the Occupied Wall Street Journal.

Far from "dwindling" in numbers, the New York protest continues to grow. Moreover, the movement has now spread to more than 50 cities, from major hubs like Chicago to such smaller places as McAllen, Texas. All across the U.S.A., "something is happening here" — something that might be big. Link into it at

I will be

I will be interesting but it won't be a surprise.

Everytime I wire in to see

Everytime I wire in to see what's happening i'm overwhelmed with emotion at what these brave souls are doing. This has been a long time coming. We fully support you from the UK and are doing what little we can to assist and promote awareness of the effort they are making towards change. :)

Everyone stop complaining

Everyone stop complaining about police brutality. This movement is not against the nypd or police forces. At the end of the day they are doing their job. Protest in peace against the real criminals and move along.

Naomi Klein got it. A long

Naomi Klein got it. A long time ago. But most of the people in this country are too busy watching "reality TV" and shopping in the malls to have read The Shock Doctrine

If you read this book, everything that is happening in Europe and the US will make perfect sense.

Absolutely right. It is so

Absolutely right. It is so sad that so many Americans rely on the purchased media for black and white answers. They listen to the purchased broadcasters, and newspapers which tell us about hate and evil and they themselves are the elite who are killing off the middle class. Let's fight for our rughts to think, act and save our Country from the tyrrany of the rich and powerful.

Boycott all corporations.

Boycott all corporations. Don't watch TV. Don't drive a car alone. Car pool no less than 4. Form cooperative farms instead of lawns. Dont eat fast food or shop at big box. Look for natural cures for medical problems. Don' feed the corporate filth. Shop at farmer's markets, make clothing, buy at GoodWill. Burn your credit cards. Don't feed the corporate filth. Start a small business, get a hot dog stand and set it up in front of McD. Bake bread.

Don't feed the disgusting filthy little spineless, back-stabbing, lying, cowering, child-slaughtering corporate excrement. They are the trash, the sewage, the decay, the disease and the cancer of human society.

feel such a sense of pride

feel such a sense of pride for these folks on Wall Street, and it is so disheartening to watch "news" and if it is covered at all, the corporate media finds the most inarticulate, although earnest of you to interview. Then they comment on how "vague" are the aims. Well, they continue to twist and shape what the corporate bosses want. Those who take the time to check out these pages, find incredibly articulate and well spoken young people who can think clearly and express exactly the aims which are clear. I just continue to discuss it with friends, and direct people here.

Keep it up! And know we are behind you here in the west.

Tonight I was watching as

Tonight I was watching as thousands of people lined the sidewalks on Broadway, then the police started a violent action against protesters without provocation, one cop was swinging his baton wildly. Others moved in and pepper sprayed people who were attempting to move out of the way. It is clear that the police have their marching orders from up high, to provoke and disrupt a peaceful assembly of citizens because it does not fit the grand narrative presented to us by the powerful media and the politicians that line their pockets and their friends pockets with the blood of humanity. The NYT has been purposefully remiss of their duties as a journalistic publication to publish events in their own town. What remains to be seen, but I sincerely hope that it happens, is if this movement can resist the onslaught of repression that, to mirror Siria and Iran, the US Government, at different levels, is orchestrating on orders of their corporate masters.

Well said!

Well said!

Who cares what the lap-dog

Who cares what the lap-dog media whores of Corporate Amerika think or "understand'? Or the bought and paid for political whores of both establishment parties? This isn't about them. This is about the Real America--about all of the rest of us that they have ignored for decades, and continue to ignore while they serve their Corporate Masters. Revolution is outside of their political paradigm, which is all about elections, and polls, and the whole horse race thing and who are the Republicans going to nominate and Perry, Bachmann, Romney, etc. etc. which is all totally irrelevant to what is beginning to happen in the streets. ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE !!

Keeping it honest: Remember

Keeping it honest: Remember the Movie: “Wall Street?” Isn’t Greed supposed to be NOT good?
So many news articles stating that American protesters have “no clear “agenda? It seems crystal clear to the middle class America that they are frustrated by the lack of concern that exists for the people in this country who need jobs and hope to support themselves and families.
Millions of unemployed people looking for work in this country are being ignored and slowly erased by mega-corporations including Big Oil, Banks, Computer Co., Drug Insurance Companies, whose only concern is for their obscene profits far exceed anyone’s understanding!
The beauty and treasured tradition of America allows people the freedom to unite and speak out to draw attention to these huge social injustices. It’s about time that Americans did and said, “we are mad as hell and we are not going take it any longer!”
For the record, “Greed is Not good”; it’s ugly, selfish, obscene and destructive for our society. After all, We are a still a democracy, not aristocracy! Just look around this great county!
" It's no surprise that the Romney campaign and his republicans buddies in the Congress are raising money from Wall Street by saying they want to repeal consumer protections sand allow Wall Street to write its own rules," KEEPING IT HONEST: Wall Street, a key contributor to Obama in 2008, seems to be switching allegiances.
" Hum.. I wonder why? Maybe the gang on Wall Street does not wish to alienate “their” representatives? Mr. Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy and Ryan and Senator McConnell and his 43 obstructionists in the senate that are provided their campaign funds! This is not aBanana Republic! After all, this same Wall Street Gang were the direct recipients of trillion dollar tax payer bailout with no conditions and used it some of it for bonuses!
According to Senator Bernie Sanders, it is now clear that the Republicans /hypocrites made pledges that they are for their “only” plan of continuing its Class War against the middle Class to protect their rich Millionaires on Wall street and Billions like the Gover Norquest, Russ Limbaugh, Rupert Murdock and others like the Koch Brothers that provide them their campaign funds! Their plan was never about creating American jobs for the unemployed middle class! LET'S PUBLICLY LIST THE NAME OF EVERY POLITICIAN AND WALL STREET GIVER SO AMERICAN CAN KNOW WHO IS ON "TAKE" AND SELLING MIDDLE AMERICA OUT!

As this spreads, it will be

As this spreads, it will be interesting to see if the US responds to popular insurrection any better than Libya or Syria.

So parallel to all mass

So parallel to all mass movements, with the connection to other Spring forwards to the future our faith and perseverance through the Bushstapo terrorism will be rewarded, it is Life, education and life that win the future, the reactionaries want a reaction , this generation with the most information ever availible at its disposal is guaranteed a victory, knowledge is power, not wealth and violence, so are wise enough to be non violent and not react, to react is to give strength to the straw puppets and non persons of the one percent and their repressive arms, flow like the water, wear the rocks in their head down, they will see it is all love and life , the rest aberrations and death throes of the old systems that no longer serve them either.

Hi Jim, Great article.

Hi Jim, Great article. Thought I might help the movement a little by sharing my take on things after secretly working inside a famous Right-Wing-Nut organization and also from 30+ years working with top Fortune 100 corporations and directly with those Presidents.

This story is not about glamorized or fictional piracy. This is, “real piracy.”

Hundreds of our wealthiest leaders and most powerful corporations know that in the next few years, they will be able to siphon, skim, and steal, so much “NEW CASH,” that they and their progeny will be ultra-rich for generations to come.

No, this is not funny, or fiction, or a conspiracy, it is just simple greed and simple theft.
The new pirates of America have launched an all-out siege on us in order to capture, amass, and hold trillions of dollars for themselves.

All of the recent political power grabs and nonsensical debating is purely a slight-of-hand deflection. President Obama, Democrats, Republicans, the International Press, and even the Tea Party, are watching the tiny pea in the shell game…while the rich and powerful “Piratical Right” is stealing America right out from under us. (Don't believe me? Okay. So, put a couple of good researchers on it and see what they turn-up.)

Consider that their combined total plunder from corporate flipping, downsizing, offshore labor, speculation, price fixing of oil and energy plus, corruption in defense, health care, banking, student loans, foreclosures, etc., etc., is a trillion dollar treasure for these pirates.
Go ahead, put your own calculator to it.

Are they smarter than we are? Yes, and they are laughing at us. I, we, you, and all of us, have not been able see the big picture of what is happening to our own country and to our own people. The rape and theft of America, has been cleverly packaged, promoted, and sold under the guise of “cost-cutting,” “deregulation,” and “free enterprise.”

The “Piratical Right” is directly responsible for millions of people dying, getting sick, losing their jobs and homes, losing their ability to fight, their spirit, and even losing their will to live. The sick smell of this carnage now permeates the air across America.

To us, this is all unimaginable, because we look for some sense or the morality of things. These modern-day American pirates however, have no moral compass. They are devoid of any conscience, humanity or soul, and are feeding on the flesh of the American people.

Don’t look to the President, the Senate, Congress, the press, or any political party to help. Sadly, they just don’t see it, don’t care, or are part of it. “We the people” are on our own. Start asking questions. Demand answers. If we don’t fight back America…who will?

History has taught us how to stop piracy.

Gregory Bateson said it is

Gregory Bateson said it is like:
1. there are those that eat to live,
2. there are those that live to eat (of whom, life exists),
3. there are those who live and eat.

I call the last category the undead, and they are running our lives, but they make category 2 completely ignorant of their 'ancestry' (by necessity).

Let us put Nuremburg to good use for the first time and negotiate a first WorldCourt trial that actually goes after the war criminals and punishes them instead of promoting them. For example, let's put evidence on trial at the World Court to go after the central cabal, or the Security Council for the UN. I believe it would be held in TheHague, Netherlands, and get this cry out on the front page of The Occupy Wall Street Journal, now out. Furthermore, all the formal evidence of past court proceedings to use in court has been obtained to identify the guilty, those manipulating the financing for the most heinous crimes ever and laundering the 'earnings,' by Indira Singh who seems to be missing from 2008. You should google her 2005 talks on the late Michael Corbin's show, A Closer Look, Corbin having been found murdered in 08 about the time Singh came up missing (check out Richard Andrew Grove in connection with her in 08 missing status), or Singh interviewed by Bonnie Faulkner of Guns and Butter, perhaps more important. She is simply unbelievable, and now she is missing. I have fell victim to some of the associated crime she lists vis a vis an analogous news story about Thomas Tamm of FBI acclaim interviewed on NPR, I having become part of 'this' database. As much as I hate to admit it, it is just the history of tricks. True biological ecology (autonomy of the species) could be so much more intelligent, like Francisco J. Varela, or James Lovelock.

7 Compelling Reasons Why You Should Support NationofChange

Our readers often tell us why they’ve decided to step up and become supporters. Here are some of the top reasons people are giving.

1. You’re keeping independent journalism alive
The corporate owned media has proven that it can’t be trusted. In a media landscape wrought with spin and corruption, NationofChange stands in very scarce company.

2. You’re sticking it to the rich, powerful, and corrupt
When you have money in this country you can get away with damn near anything, and they do. NationofChange isn’t afraid to expose these criminals no matter how powerful they are.

3. Your donation is 100% tax-deductible
NationofChange is a 501(c)3 charity. People tend to assume that many other organizations are (most nonprofits are NOT) but it’s that 501(c)3 status is a bit more rare than you think.
