An infographic released by the California Innocence Project has shown the cost of the death penalty on taxpayers wallets. California alone has spent over 4 billion dollars on deathrow inmates since 1978. $177 million is spent on deathrow inmates  per year. 3 exonerations have been given in California to death row inmates since 1973.
