Nikki Haley announced her resignation as the United States ambassador to the United Nations come the end of the year. After appearing with Donald Trump on Tuesday morning in the Oval Office, Haley called the position an “honor of a lifetime.”
Haley, who was the former governor of South Carolina, didn’t comment on her next move, but did say that she will be campaigning for Trump in 2020. According to NPR, Haley “has been a fierce advocate for Trump’s policies at the U.N.”
“I proudly serve in this administration, and I enthusiastically support most of its decisions and the direction it is taking the country,” Haley wrote in The Washington Post last month. “But I don’t agree with the president on everything.”
Not only did Trump praise Haley on an “incredible job” by “somebody who gets it,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked her for her support of Israel in saying she “led an uncompromising fight against the United Nations’ hypocrisy and for truth and justice in our country.”
But on Monday, Haley came under fire after Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW), a federal watchdog group, revealed her “acceptance of gifts of private luxury air travel” and asked the State Department’s inspector general to launch an investigation.
“Ambassador Haley should have been conscious of the appearance concerns surrounding her acceptance of gifts of private luxury air travel at a time when her colleagues in the administration were making news with their own lavish air travel,” CREW wrote.
While it’s unclear what prompted Haley’s resignation, Trump said that he has known for six months, but hopes she will come back to the administration in another capacity, NPR reported. Trump said he will name Haley’s successor in the coming weeks – Dina Powell being one person he was being considering for the role.
