Twenty-Two States File Brief Asking Supreme Court to Back Off Citizens United
Twenty-two states joined an amicus brief that will be filed today in the Supreme Court by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D) calling for the Supreme Court to back off its election-buying decision in Citizens United. The brief, which supports the state of Montana’s effort to preserve its ban on corporate money in elections, argues that state elections present an even greater risk than federal elections of being corrupted by corporate money — and thus states should be allowed to restrict such money even if the justice cling to their idiosyncratic belief that federal bans on corporate election spending are unconstitutional.
Sadly, the states’ brief only highlights the partisan impact of Citizens United. Of the 22 states that joined the brief, only three — Idaho, Washington and Utah — have Republican attorneys general. Additionally, top Republican elected officials and lobbying organizations, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, previously filed briefs calling for the justices to redouble their commitment to corporate influence on elections.
The GOP’s loyalty to Citizens United is disappointing, but it is not surprising. As ThinkProgress previously explained, Citizens United succeeded in transforming a moderate election spending advantage for Democrats into a massive advantage for Republicans:

Yet, while Citizens United enjoys strong support among Republican officials (and among the five Republican justices responsible for it), few Americans share this view. According to a recent Brennan Center poll, only 15 percent of respondents agree with the core of Citizens United‘s reasoning, that allowing wealthy corporations and individuals to spend unlimited money trying to influence elections will not lead to corruption — four percent fewer than believe in “spells or witchcraft” according to a different poll.

Corporations are associations. Dems (& Reps & 3rd Parties) need to start running their own primaries (or other means of selecting candidates) perhaps using Ranked Ballot ("RB", voters ranking candidates in order of preference), Organized Communications ("OC"), randomly scheduled primaries & (in the case of left parties) progressive party dues, or (in the case of right wing parties) bidding for seats, flat dues or buying stock in the party . The form chosen will affect the choices made. This will save vast sums, as TV & radio ads will no longer be needed, especially once the candidates & websites have been named. It would be impossible for big media to ignore their googleness even without the URLs up on all the podiums. A random primary system might have one randomly chosen state’s primary eleven months before the election, two the next month & so on, until the remainder were held in the October before the election. OC is randomly assigned discussion groups electing reps (by means of Ranked Ballot) to higher & higher randomly assigned levels, ‘til one small group, most exactly in the middle remains, which by its merest invitation to speak inevitably indicates the next candidate (or winner). The “additive” form of Ranked Ballot is counting the first choices, & then, if noone has 50%, adding in the next choices, & so on, until someone finally does. One would have hoped there’d have been an RB Caucus in the Democrat-ish party, at least, by now, but that'll be a long time coming. Or alternately, we could just deny ALL groups political particpation, & limit it to individuals, but I think it'll prove to be fool's goal. Money is fungible. They'll just use associations to do everything else they can. The parties should apply such rules (equal representation, equal influence, competition on the merits of ideas, candidate & legislator freedom from time consuming fundraising, fiduciary transparency, letting only individuals & not lobbyists make contributions) to themselves,& if they are so truly superior, they'll not only pick the most perfect candidate, but also assure their victory.

Something like that might happen in a democratic society, but it will never happen here.

Citizens united decision by the supreme court flies into the doctrine of the seperation of power granted to the people by the constitution. It is the spirt of the law if not the letter that must be part of this major decision of this court that will impact us for years to come and can perpatuaate bad governments othervise legally elected.

The thing that is the most twisted about Citizens United is that it is tied to the 14th amendment. That the amendment to uphold the rights of freed slaves as citizens has been used to crown corporations with those same rights is blasphemous, if not downright unholy, in my opinion.

Does it occur to anyone who really benefits from Citizens United???....TV! Yup, those little rascals in L.A. are hauling in the whole advertising budget of Billions from both sides. And what is taken for granted in this??....the Public will be persuaded by television advertising. Talk about getting your politics out of a cracker-jack box, how about getting your President out of a TV? As the victim of two corporations, Sparknet Communications and CBS (these collaborate in broadcasting "Jack" FM radio), I am most sensitive to corporations "having" human rights to "broadcast what they want" regardless of how worthless, idiotic, and inhumane it is.

Why do you think the GOP has packed the Court, the House, and trying to get a hold of the Senate? They are there to stick the needles of the 1% into the flesh of the 99% to keep sucking them dry. Not that the Democrats would be much different but the Democrats would leave some of the blood in the 99% so they can keep generating more blood, instead of the GOP strategy to suck them DRY!

America has had to do away with things like citizens united in the past. It took a presidents help to get rid of the likes of Tammany Hall. Citizens united and the justices that finagled it into being are no better than Boss Tweed of Tammany Hall. There has got to be a way to overturn citizens united if we have to impeach the justices guilty of weaseling it into existence.

Teabagger/rethug, NeoNazi, fascist, authoritarian corporatists Roberts, Alito, Scalia, Thomas, and Kennedy can't and don't want to hear it -- they gave corporations personhood and free speech rights, so get over it.
Their billionaire buddies can contribute unlimited amounts of money anonymously to their favorite politicians to have their voices heard, and that's the law as long as they're on the US Supreme kangaroo kourt -- Money Talks!

Corporation already run the show in our country. Why let them run who wins our elections as well? The American people deserve better and the Supreme Court is bought and sold by the powers that be now, meaning big money, low tax-paying giant corporations.
