The Walmart Heirs Have the Same Net Worth as the Bottom 30 Percent of Americans

In a given year, the richest ten percent of the country takes home about one quarter of total income.

Income inequality in the U.S. is currently the highest its been since the 1920swith the 400 richest Americans (who are all billionaires) having as much wealth as the bottom 50 percent of Americans combined. And as it turns out, just one wealthy family has managed to amass a fortune equal to that of the combined net worth of the bottom 30 percent of Americans — the Waltons, heirs to the Walmart fortune, as Sylvia Allegretto, a labor economist at the Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics, found:

The triennial Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) is one of the best sources for data on wealth in the U.S. And, of course the Forbes 400 estimates the worth of the wealthiest amongst us—all 400 wouldn’t be captured in the SCF. If we look at both the SCF and the Forbes 400 we can glean some interesting insights.

In 2007 (the most recent SCF) the cumulative wealth of the Forbes 400 was $1.54 trillion or roughly the same amount of wealth held by the entire bottom fifty percent of American families. This is a stunning statistic to be sure.

Upon closer inspection, the Forbes list reveals that six Waltons—all children (one daughter-in-law) of Sam or James “Bud” Walton the founders of Wal-Mart—were on the list. The combined worth of the Walton six was $69.7 billion in 2007—which equated to the total wealth of the entire bottom thirty percent!

Not only have the Waltons gathered a fortune equal to that of the bottom third of the country, but they spend it lobbying to cut their own taxes. For years, the Waltons have been supporting efforts to cut the estate tax, the tax levied on inheritance. Conservatives intent on cutting this tax — which they’ve brilliantly dubbed the “death tax” — led to President Obama agreeing to a “compromise” last year that lowered the rate and increased the tax-free exemption, giving a senseless tax break to extremely wealthy families.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, “for the 1 percent of the population with the highest income, average real after-tax household income grew by 275 percent between 1979 and 2007,” while it grew by just 18 percent for the bottom 20 percent of the income scale. In a given year, the richest ten percent of the country takes home about one quarter of total income. But Congress still saw fit last year to give a tax break to the very richest families, who have collected fortunes that dwarf anything the rest of the country will ever see.

To Maggie: "Time to dump the party system and get some decent honest people into those seats - if that is even possible!"

First, the party system is the embodiment of "the evil of two lessers". Second, as to "decent honest people", that's impossible. By the time an otherwise honest person gets elected, he or she already owes favours to the necessary evil of financial backers. As soon as you owe favours, you can no longer be honest with no strings attached.

"Good for the Waltons! Most in their shoes would do the same as they do to protect their wealth. Trying to further tax them would only result in them re-locating to another country with more lenient tax laws. Then we would lose their personal income taxes and only get their corporate and residential taxes which would be exceedingly minimal."

You write as though you actually know something about their personal and corporate tax situation when, in reality; you probably know SFA like the rest of us. My guess is that they have already "relocated" their taxes and already pay nothing.

They are bottom-feeders who prey on the bulk of consumers who cannot afford anything better than their prices on Asian crap. They prey also on the bottom end of Chinese workers who have no choice in working for minimal wages. They are almost invisibly subsidised by western taxpayers who are forced to take of their workers who would have no medical care because of their predatory employment practices.

I nominate Wal-Mart for the booby prize in the Corporate Citizen Of The Year Award.

Enough already! You have posted this TOO MANY TIMES. Do you really have so little to say? Even your "handle" shows a lack of any thought. I'm trying to make up my mind whether you're an annoying mental midget or an actual troll.

The masses, ie, the have-nots, are not victims. They simply lack the intelligence, greed, and ruthlessness of the HAVES. In America, INTELLIGENCE, GREED AND RUTHLESSNESS are REWARDED WITH WEALTH. The rest of us are lucky to have the scraps.

blah blah blah blah blah.... cry me a river won't you?? this an every article out there like it serve one and only one purpose, to create envy and provide backing for the LEFT to justify its mob campaign agianst anyone who has it *better* than anyone else. When did freedom include the RIGHT to either have more than the other guy or the same???If you want to complain about all of the imported goods from a comunist country, i.e. the dealings of Wally World, then you have my attention. Of course, you can't bring this up without bringing up the fact that we all demand more for less and could not afford the products we buy from foreign factories if people in America made them at the wage they expected to receive...And... yes, there is the age old question, why not simply tax those with more (aka the *rich* (not sure where the *wealthy* come in)), in order to fund all of the BS programs that both the LEFT and RIGHT have felt the need to install at federal, state and local levels of goverment... Of course, you could simply force government to leave within their means.... ah, but that is a different article, a different thread...Thanks again for once again putting something out there that stirs the pot by identifying what *some* perceive as a problem, without, of course, proposing a solution... Tell you what... if you came into my office with a problem and without a solution, you would be sent out faster than you got in...Thanks so much for stating the obvious, apparnetly for the sole purpose of filling some internet blog space...

I would add to my comments earlier that I seriously doubt a tax increase on those being called out here would result in any money in your pocket or mine.. so, what is the point, other than to stir the pot...

mangliss

December 10, 2011 3:15pm

I hate auto correct... please excuse the blatent mis-wording...

Of course, I missed the biggest point on this issue... and that is more of a question than comment...

How many people (tax payers) actually believe that if we woke up tomorrow and the *rich* were taxed more (60%? 70%? 80%? 90%), the government would actually then reduce the tax on the rest of us? In short, how many people believe that there is any basis to assume that an increase on one sector would result in an decrease in the other?

Fact is (fact used loosely), many people would be just as happy to see someone else get nailed and a net zero positive result (improvement) to themselves, as they would be if they had a tax relief instead... hey.. if I can't have it, why should anyone else...

Jealousy is a sin, last I knew it... problem is, far too many people in America spend too much time worrying about how they compare to their neighbor, and too little time enjoying what they have (be it big or small)...

The true amount of people that remain on welfare when our economy offers the means to become prosperous are a very small percent. These that remain are stuck in their lives and have no clue about the joys of learning and living.
The problem today and why the welfare system grows so fat is the economic model of the "Trickle down Economy" and those being on the upper most level have forgotten how this model works. For several decades downward flow decreased exponentialy while the cost of living in all areas rose exponentialy.
Obtaining an education so that one could get a lucritive career had most frustrated at the reality of dwindling fields to choose from coupled with a huge debt owed for said education.

Being on welfare sucks , who the hell would want to live a life on meager scraps that just kept one able to survive. Those who intentionally opt out for this are not in their right mind to start with. The majority would never choose this but instead would opt for a full life of their own choosing further cultivating themselves discovering their potential and those around them. This is an awesome life that enriches . Welfare ??? are you joking!!!! The majority of us wouldn't even entertain the thought... THINK before you write such ridiculous nonsense

Maybe instead of focusing on getting more money out of the poor, we should stop giving so much to the rich. Subsidized housing investments, cash bailout assistance, subsidized agriculture, tax breaks for oil giants, price/profit protection for pharmacuetical and health insurance companies, speculation deregulation....We are spending a lot of money rewarding people for making obscene profits they can't justify and not really having jobs, and getting angry at those that we can't bleed any more money out of to pay for it. Anyone who disagrees has not worked a day for a living in a country where they witness people abusing the system who feel entitled to tax free services day after day.

Remember the corner grocery store? Wallmart lobbied to make them illegal, making laws against free enterprise along with apple pie and Mom. It's unpatriotic to shop at Walmart. Yeah, because the Waltons worked SO HARD for their wealth. Guess we can forget about all the low wage workers who are actually responsible for the Waltons INHERITED fortune! God, what planet are you even living on? Yeah, like Walmart is going anywhere. Service industry jobs always stay home, and besides, what are they going to outsource? All their stuff is already made in China, genius. What are they going to do, close all their stores here and rebuild them elsewhere? Yeah, because they're going to make so much more money selling stuff to people who make 50 bucks a month making the products that go in their stores. Keep drinking that kool-aid, bub.

With the average household debt as high as it is, I'm surprised America's poorest 30% have a positive net worth. How is it that the country can be 15 trillion in debt (over 48,000 per citizen) but the poorest third are still in the black? I'd think anyone whose assets were greater than their liabilities would be in the upper half at least. Like how does anyone get ahead anymore?

Boycott WALMART...they are a huge part of the problem.

THE AMERICAN PIRATES OF WALL STREET, ARE KILLING AMERICANS.

This is not about glamorized or fictional piracy. This is, “real piracy.”

Hundreds of our wealthiest leaders and most powerful corporations know that in the next few years, they will be able to siphon, skim, and steal, so much “NEW CASH,” that they and their progeny will be ultra-rich for generations to come.

No, this is not funny, or fiction, or a conspiracy, it is just simple greed and simple theft.
The new pirates of America have launched an all-out siege on us in order to capture, amass, and hold trillions of dollars for themselves.

All of the recent political power grabs and nonsensical debating is purely a slight-of-hand deflection. President Obama, Democrats, Republicans, the International Press, and even the Tea Party, are watching the tiny pea in the shell game…while the rich and powerful “Piratical Right” is stealing America right out from under us.

Consider that their combined total plunder from corporate flipping, downsizing, offshore labor, speculation, price fixing of oil and energy plus, corruption in defense, healthcare, banking, student loans, foreclosures, etc., etc., is a trillion dollar treasure for these pirates.
Go ahead, put your own calculator to it.

Are they smarter than we are? Yes, and they are laughing at us. I, we, you, and all of us, have not been able see the big picture of what is happening to our own country and to our own people. The rape and theft of America, has been cleverly packaged, promoted, and sold under the guise of “cost-cutting,” “deregulation,” and “free enterprise.”

The “Piratical Right” is directly responsible for millions of people dying, getting sick, losing their jobs and homes, losing their ability to fight, their spirit, and even losing their will to live. The sick smell of this carnage now permeates the air across America.

To us, this is all unimaginable, because we look for some sense or the morality of things. These modern-day American pirates however, have no moral compass. They are devoid of any conscience, humanity or soul, and are feeding on the flesh of the American people.

Don’t look to the President, the Senate, Congress, the press, or any political party to help. Sadly, they just don’t see it, don’t care, or are part of it. “We the people” are on our own. Start asking questions. Demand answers. If we don’t fight back America…who will?

History has taught us how to stop piracy.

I see many of you do not get it. Pres. Obama is held at bay by the rich and powerful Illuminati, as is Congress. The Walmart did not pay taxes last year. And you say they deserve it. Wake up! The Waltons and member corporations are running the world and driving it into the ground in the name of greed. They will be held accountable in the end and very soon. We must forgive them for they refuse to thank the very ones who got them there. No one becomes rich by themselves.

If we add the net worth of the top 3700 people of this country, I would not be surprised if it is more than the net worth of 50% of the US citizens. That means just 0.0001% of the population control the wealth of the nation and sets structures for the rest of us. Expose the true picture....

The Walton's have passed medical costs for their employees to American taxpayers by not providing medical benefits or making access to benefits unaffordable for their employees. Because they pay so poorly, many of their employee's qualify for free medical through Medicaid. We all pay for that. They have fought health care reform because now they will have to pick up some of the costs for their employees. I don't shop Walmart and never will because of this and their systamatic method of ruining small town businesses. They are a blight on the America we once knew and loved.

Laura Morris

December 09, 2011 6:22pm

I won't pretend to know what Walmart does everywhere, but in this area, Walmart is the only business of any kind that offers health insurance to part-time employees. I do know that "on the national scene" they not only have not fought health reform but have supported it. In addition, they were the first in the country to use their bargaining power to make prescription drugs available at prices poor people could afford. In the healthcare program for uninsured that I manage, they frequenlty waive any payment if I call and tell them someone needs a drug and doesn't have the money to pay for it. I am well aware that they too frequently run local shops out of business, and I hate that; but they are certainly not the only large company to do so. At least they rarely close up shop and leave town after doing so. Why don't outfits like Barnes & Noble who don't have health benefits for their part-time workers and too often leave after they've run off all the local book stores get this kind of grief?

One more example of people who got wealthy without producing or creating much or anything themselves that contributed to their wealth. WalMart has kept worker at 36-38 hr. "part time" jobs for years to deny them receiving benefits; many take second jobs to help, but after putting in so many hrs at WM, it's not easy to fit in another job. Sam Walton absolutely built an empire by screwing workers and cheating the taxpayers with "special treatment. His heirs continue to do the same thing and won't stop, even with a very well secured foundation of wealth. They too join the long line of the 1% wealthiest and greediest. I agree with the NObama remarks; he's an arrogant elitest who's tricked liberals into putting him into the presidency, and obviously never intended to represent our interests there. Sanders for President.

charlotte

You are right - most people who are billionaires do try to cut thier taxes. Unfortunately, brain-dead people like yourself fail to see the extreme inequity of people who make fortunes on the backs of others' labors. Someone has to stock the shelves, man the registers, etc., in their thousands of stores. Without labor, they would be nowhere. It is people as yourself that help perpetuate the feudal system that we now have in this country by failing to see that the system is corrupted to favor those who already have money. Criticizing inequality has nothing to do with jealousy. Failure to recognize the contribution made by workers is part of the plan to deny the 99% their freedom under which that worthless piece of paper we call a constitution supposedly guarantees every citizen. The Walton heirs have no accomplishments. They were handed that money just by virtue of having the Walton name. It was grandpa Walton who had the accomplishments. After that, it was the people, high paid executives especially, that expanded the stores, while the Waltons sat at home, building security fences around their property, and collected the profits that hundreds of thousands of workers generated for them.

You are also very blind to the quagmire and demise of the capitalist system as we know it. A worker puts in a 40 hour week for a year and takes home maybe $25,000. A Walton puts in the same amount of hours and make a billion dollars, yet you seem to think this is OK. Will this change? Probably not, for this distorted system has been in place since the time of the pharaohs, and the rich spent a good part of their money to make sure the system remained unfair.

The rich get richer, while the poor stays poor. The rich get richer, while the poor stays poor. The rich get richer, while the poor stays poor. The rich get richer, while the poor stays poor. In a utopic society, these rich people would pay their same share as middle and lower class. Tea Party members thought they had the answers, but got to D.C. and saw status quo. You can't change greed if you never had money. A lot of these TP's congressmen and women and senators learned that even when you played hardball, it's the money that makes D.C. operate. You see when you are new to the game and you finally make more money in your paycheck and you are finally ahead on your bills, you start to think I need more greenbacks. That's the greed and need to return back to this cushy job with three hour lunches and days where you work from your home office simply because you don't want to come in, and still receive that 15000 plus paycheck every two weeks and cash it in a bank that we regular Americans no nothing about. You know they don't have to worry about spending their paychecks that we foot, because they pay on a card that we also foot. New money does this. It's like going to college for the first time and you get a new credit card. You spend, what do you care it's not your money, right. We foot the bill and then you tax us because we don't pay for your meals from boosters and lobbyists who want their agenda passed. Think again we want you to pay us for the charges on our accounts. Stop acting like we don't matter because we do. The rich get richer, while the poor stays poor. The rich get richer, while the poor stays poor. The rich get richer, while the poor stays poor. Exactly. What a misleading article. The money belongs to the Waltons, not to you, me or the government. Any lobbying for lower taxes by the Waltons helps us all. Don't forget that. Umm WRONG...How about some facts from the CBBP's own website

"Almost no small farms and businesses owe any estate tax
The vast majority of small business and small farm estates already escape the estate tax.
The Tax Policy Center estimates that fewer than 0.2 percent of all estates — two of every 1,000 — will be subject to tax in 2009.[3]
Moreover, only about 1.3 percent of the tiny fraction of estates that are taxable are small business or farm estates — that is, estates in which a small business or farm that is valued at up to $5 million makes up the majority of the estate (see Figure 1).
This means that only 0.003 percent of all estates — that is, the estates of three out of every 100,000 people who die this year — will be small business or farm estates that owe any estate tax."

"Some proponents of repealing or weakening the estate tax beyond its current form claim that doing is so is necessary because of the impact of the tax on small business and farm estates.[2] Yet if the 2009 estate tax parameters were made permanent, almost no small business and farm estates would owe any estate tax: just 140 such estates in the entire nation would be taxable in 2011, and virtually none of them would have to be liquidated to pay the tax."
