Why Jobs Must Be Our Goal Now, Not Deficit Reduction

Article image

The news today from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is that the U.S. job market is treading water.

The number of new jobs created in December (155,000), and percent unemployment (7.8), were the same as the revised numbers for November.

Also, about the same number of people are looking for work (12.2 million), with additional millions too discouraged even to look.

Put simply, we’re a very long way from the job growth we need to get out of the gravitational pull of the Great Recession. That would be at least 300,000 new jobs per month.

All of which means job growth and wage growth should be the central focus of economic policy, not deficit reduction.

Yet all we’re hearing from Washington — and all we’re likely to hear as Republicans and Democrats negotiate over raising the debt ceiling — is how to cut the deficit.

The typical American worker’s paycheck will drop this week because his or her Social Security tax will rise, from 4.2 percent to 6.2 percent. That’s nonsensical.

We need to put more money into the pockets of average workers, not less. The first $25,000 of income should be exempt from Social Security taxes altogether, and we should make up the difference by eliminating the ceiling on income subject to Social Security taxes.

ABOUT Robert Reich

ROBERT B. REICH, one of the nation’s leading experts on work and the economy, is Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley. He has served in three national administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Bill Clinton. Time Magazine has named him one of the ten most effective cabinet secretaries of the last century. He has written thirteen books, including his latest best-seller, “Aftershock: The Next Economy and America’s Future;” “The Work of Nations,” which has been translated into 22 languages; and his newest, an e-book, “Beyond Outrage.” His syndicated columns, television appearances, and public radio commentaries reach millions of people each week. He is also a founding editor of the American Prospect magazine, and Chairman of the citizen’s group Common Cause. His widely-read blog can be found at www.robertreich.org. Robert Reich's new film, "Inequality for All" is available on DVD
and blu-ray, and on Netflix in February.

Reich is right, when the

Reich is right, when the economy recovers, revenues will increase and deficits decrease, but the most important thing is to enable that recovery.
Most deficit reduction talk is just code for, "stop spending on things I disagree with or don't value."

Herbert Hoover's austerity

Herbert Hoover's austerity programs work fine with Globalization and the necessity of reducing this nation's standard of living so China, India, Brazil, and other 3rd world countries can raise theirs.

They are bragging about

They are bragging about creating 168,000 low paying jobs a month while 31 millions are either out of work or severely underemployed…however…we need 833,000 jobs a month for the rest of Obama’s term of office to replace all of the jobs lost by the treasonous greed deployed by corporations.

The only way to reemploy all of those out of work is to do something neither Bush Nor Obama nor Romney would or will do.

What is that secret? WELL Harry Truman used it to reemploy those coming home from WW II and it is simple yet neither Bush, Obama, McCain, nor Romney ever even mentioned it.

Here it is:

PLACE EXCISE TAXES ON ALL OUTSOURCED JOBS AND IMPORTS, RAISING THEIR COST TO 5%-10% HIGHER THAN THE COST TO MANUFACTURE THE PRODUCTS IN ONE OR MORE OF THE 50 STATES!

THAT IS SIMPLE ENOUGH, BUT THEY WILL NEVER DO IT UNLESS YOU CALL THE WHITE HOUSE AND TELL THEM:

THE NUMBER IS: 1-202-456-1111. FIVE DAYS A WEEK VOLUNTEERS AT THE WHITE HOUSE ANSWER AND RECORD YOUR COMMENTS AND PASS IT ON THE READERS IN THE WHITE HOUSE STAFF WHO PREPARE A SHORT VERSION OF YOUR COMMENTS.

I agree. We cannot compete

I agree.
We cannot compete with country's that have no labor laws or no pollution control laws or workers compensation system or employees willing to work for nothing. Look how Apple treated and paid there employees in China. No wonder Gates is so Rich.
You cannot have a World economy if the playing field isn't the same for all.
We also have a tax system here that eats up the same amount of the GNP for tax breaks and loopholes for the top percent as does the so called entitlement programs do. close all of those and tax and penalize and jail people hiding money overseas and watch how fast this deficit is fixed .
they will not even jail the people that tanked the banks or laundered money for terrorist and drug lords.
2014 cannot come fast enough to get rid of all of these self serving so called servants of the the american people. We need to clean house and Senate and send a strong message that we will no longer tolerate them working for the lobbyist.

7 Compelling Reasons Why You Should Support NationofChange

Our readers often tell us why they’ve decided to step up and become supporters. Here are some of the top reasons people are giving.

1. You’re keeping independent journalism alive
The corporate owned media has proven that it can’t be trusted. In a media landscape wrought with spin and corruption, NationofChange stands in very scarce company.

2. You’re sticking it to the rich, powerful, and corrupt
When you have money in this country you can get away with damn near anything, and they do. NationofChange isn’t afraid to expose these criminals no matter how powerful they are.

3. Your donation is 100% tax-deductible
NationofChange is a 501(c)3 charity. People tend to assume that many other organizations are (most nonprofits are NOT) but it’s that 501(c)3 status is a bit more rare than you think.
