In a sweeping defense of oil and gas corporations, the Trump administration has filed federal lawsuits against four states to block efforts aimed at holding fossil fuel companies accountable for climate change damages—an aggressive action legal experts warn undermines state authority and sets a dangerous precedent.

From sports to academia to the arts, fossil fuel companies are pouring money on the things we love, in an effort to “not be held accountable” for climate chaos.

“It’s basically a giveaway to industry of millions of acres of the Gulf of Mexico so they can lock in production for years, at a time when we need to be shifting away from fossil fuel development.”

The oil and gas industry is looking to capitalize off an increasingly-popular socially responsible investing wave that emphasizes the environment.

Fossil fuel companies, experts say, “cannot be relied upon to decarbonize at the speed and scale needed” to tackle rising global emissions.

“I would imagine the oil companies will seek en banc [full court] review in the Ninth Circuit. If that fails they'll petition … the Supreme Court.”
