Rui Kaneya is a senior reporter at the Center for Public Integrity. Before joining Public Integrity in 2018, he was an investigative reporter for Honolulu Civil Beat, covering criminal justice, immigration and other social justice issues. He was also a correspondent for the Columbia Journalism Review and the investigations editor at The Chicago Reporter. A recipient of the Investigative Reporters and Editors Minority Fellowship and the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Minority Fellowship in Urban Journalism, he has received numerous journalism awards, among them the Watchdog Award for Excellence in Public Interest Reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists’ Salute to Excellence National Media Award. He’s also a winner for the 2020 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, administered by the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University. Taylor Johnston is a fellow at the Center for Public Integrity and is working with the data team to utilize and build upon her skills in journalism, data analysis and design.
