The Amazonian Indigenous organizations leading the plan aim to center Indigenous-led forest management and land tenure to protect endemic species.

This comes as Amazon workers worldwide from Bangladesh to Germany campaigned on Black Friday for fairer working conditions under the banner, “Make Amazon Pay.”

Brazil had managed to reduce Amazon deforestation since the 2004 total of 27,772 square kilometers. This shows that it is possible, but it depends on political will and adequate management.

“As they are protected and it has been made illegal to sell them, the species has had room to grow and the expectation is that [the population] is increasing.”

“If major retail brands truly want to do their fair share on climate change, they need to be on a course correction now, not 19 years from now.”

A company that handles Amazon customer service calls wants cameras in employees’ homes—even on their kids.

The findings, said one expert, “show that the uncertain future is happening now.”

“And you have an ecosystem like the Amazon biome that is so vulnerable to climate change and so biodiverse, the argument is there to just not be involved in oil and gas extraction in the region at all.”

It’s understandable that the super wealthy might wish to escape the gravitational pull of the rest of us. But there’s really no escape.

Amazon has fought off labor organizing at the company for decades, but workers in Baltimore, New Orleans, Portland, Denver and Southern California are now also reportedly considering union drives.
