Tracking oil exports in the Amazon identified that the majority of Amazonian oil comes from Ecuador and ends up in the hands of large California-based corporations.

Brazil had managed to reduce Amazon deforestation since the 2004 total of 27,772 square kilometers. This shows that it is possible, but it depends on political will and adequate management.

“As they are protected and it has been made illegal to sell them, the species has had room to grow and the expectation is that [the population] is increasing.”

“If major retail brands truly want to do their fair share on climate change, they need to be on a course correction now, not 19 years from now.”

A company that handles Amazon customer service calls wants cameras in employees’ homes—even on their kids.

The findings, said one expert, “show that the uncertain future is happening now.”

“And you have an ecosystem like the Amazon biome that is so vulnerable to climate change and so biodiverse, the argument is there to just not be involved in oil and gas extraction in the region at all.”
