This Trump-created crisis and the standoff that ensued give us an early indication of how little the Democratic Party as a whole has changed.

The American Federation of Government Employees, or AFGE, says it’s illegal for federal workers to be forced to work without pay.

Republican members of Congress must join with Democrats to get this task done as quickly as possible.

There will be important opportunities in the next few years to advance the movement for economic, racial and environmental justice as well as peace.

“As if missed paychecks and working without pay were not enough, now they have been told that they don’t even deserve a modest pay increase.”

So here’s a message for Trump: in addition to Syria get out of Iraq, get out of Afghanistan, and get out of the entire Middle East where this current government, with an overly aggressive foreign policy, never did belong and had no right to be.

"What if we instead added $5.7 billion in teacher pay? Or replacing water pipes? Or college tuition/prescription refill subsidies? Or green jobs?"

“This is our reality now.”

The only way we resurrect our positive story is to incinerate this fake one, to reject hatred and racism, white nationalism and smug, tribal complacency. That targets Trump and Republicanism.

"My husband is furloughed due to the Trump shutdown. This is a very stressful time, and believe me, my husband does not want that wall."
