Campaigners say the company’s net zero pledge amounts to greenwashing in light of its spiralling emissions.

"Despite the encouraging global trend," said IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera, a new publication "shows that the energy transition is far from being fast or widespread enough to avert the dire consequences of climate change."

"Joe Manchin clearly has no plan other than more of the same for the future of West Virginia," said one organizer. "More of the same maltreatment and exploitation of the poorest people in this country."

“The current crisis shows that we must accelerate, not slow, the renewable energy transition. This is the only true path to energy security.”

“President Biden campaigned on bold and ambitious goals to tackle the climate crisis and environmental injustice. Supporting the push to expand gas exports and lock in decades of fossil fuel production is directly in conflict with these goals.” 

Activists warn that calls for energy independence are just “peace washing” the fossil fuels that enabled this conflict.

"Guaranteeing another $8.8 billion to complete the project will simply be throwing good money after bad," says a new analysis, "for a total taxpayer loss of $26.1 billion."

Phasing out the consumption of fossil fuels is seen as critical in both the fight against the climate crisis and the violence of petrostates.
