Despite scary extremist brouhaha, authoritarian rule by coup won’t come to America because an inept, phony orange impresario waves his shiny baton.

Their point is to cast further doubt on its legitimacy and justify additional state measures to suppress votes and alter future elections.

Because the best way to stop a coup is to deter it.

Before Venezuela devolves into civil war, the U.S. should lift the sanctions, take the military option off the table, and get behind a negotiated, nonviolent solution.

And in the long term, there is no recognition of what does this mean for the country in terms of its social fabric, its political culture and going forward, if there’s no negotiated agreement on that process.

Now, the ongoing coup attempt is escalating through a strategy of humanitarian intervention.

John Bolton made the coup very personal this week, threatening Maduro to accept Guaido’s offer of amnesty or find himself in the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Do we think people who armed death squads and started wars really want to “bring democracy” to Venezuela?

The left has a proud tradition of both democracy and anti-imperialism. It’s critical to keep both traditions in mind when addressing the current crisis in Venezuela.
