How the mighty do fall, and how the fake mighty fall, often amidst high comedy -- with a whimper, not a bang. A little fun skewering the Donald. The good news is he won't appreciate the joke.

Unfortunately, the Republican Party and the conservative movement have not yet confronted the profound problems that Trump did not cause but merely symbolizes.

The Democratic Party has not been taking seriously many of the reasons for Trump’s support and the range of that support. And the media has not been discussing many of the reasons for Trump’s support. That needs to change.

Media are lambasting Trump for not unequivocally distancing himself from the support of white supremacists, saying his failure to do so "is disqualifying,"

“There is only one way left to blunt the yearning for fascism coalescing around Trump. It is to build, as fast as possible, movements or parties that declare war on corporate power, engage in sustained acts of civil disobedience and seek to reintegrate the disenfranchised—the ‘losers’—back into the economy and political life of the country.”

Should Trump or a Trump mini-me ultimately succeed in capturing the presidency, a possibility that can no longer be dismissed out of hand, the effects will be even more profound. In all but name, the United States will cease to be a constitutional republic.
