The United States and Russia must also finally assume the responsibility that comes with stockpiling over 90% of the world’s nuclear weapons, and agree on a plan to start dismantling them, in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the new UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

After the fall of the Soviet Union, there was a near universal understanding among political leaders that NATO expansion would be a foolish provocation against Russia. How naive we were to think the military-industrial complex would allow such sanity to prevail.

And, aside from the impotent imposing of economic sanctions on Russia and on its leaders and oligarch supporters, the U.S. has admitted there is nothing it or its NATO puppet states can do.

Continuing the war through economic means should be called what it is: a crime against humanity.

In recent days, media coverage of a possible summit between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin has taken on almost wistful qualities, as though the horsemen of the apocalypse are already out of the barn.

As US forces head to Europe and Asia, war risk grows.

"[Biden] says they'll ask a judge to establish a fund for part of the money to be used for humanitarian purposes in Afghanistan—at some point. But the problem is that more than 22 million Afghans are facing starvation today."

If the U.S. government wants to play a constructive role in Ukraine, it should genuinely support this already existing framework for a solution to the crisis, and end the heavy-handed U.S. intervention that has only undermined and delayed its implementation.

"Wars rarely turn out the way the experts tell us they will. Just ask the officials who provided rosy scenarios for the wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq."

CODEPINK is calling for "serious negotiations, not military escalation, which could easily spiral out of control to the point of pushing the world to the precipice of nuclear war" as tensions at the Russia-Ukraine border exacerbate.
