As the Trump administration continues its attempt to oust Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the U.S. has imposed a de facto embargo on oil from Venezuela’s state-run oil company.

“This is a ghastly hypocrisy in the face of an existential threat to the planet."

And even with the Trump administration rolling back a number of environmental regulations like the rules for methane flaring and venting, the oil and gas industry is looking for still more deregulation from the federal government.

"What happened here should serve as an example for the whole nation to unite behind the fight that the president is carrying out against this ill."

The struggle to preserve their lands, water, languages, cultures and way of life is seen as existential by many Indigenous communities here in Canada as across the country’s southern border in the United States.

The invisible handshake between the Interior and extractive industries originated at its founding.

There are signs the Trump administration is still at work on that fossil fuel-friendly agenda in some places, such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), despite the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

“Other countries, namely China, are frantically investing in renewables. For us to crow about our oil wealth, and not focus on renewables, is for us to miss the opportunity to be leaders in the world as it’s going to be.”

The explosions were strong enough to be felt by residents of the nearby island.

“We expected the state regulators and the governor to step in and assure the safety of Pennsylvanians. They have not.”
