In ending the war in Afghanistan, Biden left the door open for more “counterterrorism” — with serious implications for our foreign policy, politics, and legal system.

“We’ve spent billions on war. Now, let’s spend to bring Afghans to safety.”

Ironically, the collapse of the Afghanistan government is a powerful argument that the state-builders and counter-insurgency advocates failed miserably, but Biden took the blame for it.

The Taliban opted to push the U.S. out, understandably not believing that Biden was anymore sincere about ending the war and leaving their country than were presidents Bush, Obama or Trump before him.

There are significant moral costs at stake in either remaining in or withdrawing from Afghanistan.

Let’s hope Biden has learned another history lesson: That the United States should stop invading and attacking other countries.
