Hillary Clinton needs to show voters that she can make bold choices. She must embrace the populist moment and the electorate’s yearning for change if she is to fend off Trump’s insurgent challenge.

The GOP Convention slugfest already confirms this election comes down to our child energy vs. our adult tenure — politically, between the gullible open to a con artist’s reality-denying, grammar-school reductionism vs. more circumspect voters who embrace a distrusted, hawkish but manifestly rational adult.

The next step is to work to ensure that Donald Trump is routed in 2016, and to use the Democratic platform as the minimum standard that all Democratic candidates must endorse.

While Hillary Clinton’s impulse is understandable, it is also self-defeating, as now evidenced by the growing portion of the public that doesn’t trust her.

The real Trump isn’t a populist. He’s a plutocrat. Above all, he’s a con man.

Indicting Clinton would require the Justice Department to apply a legal standard that would endanger countless officials throughout the government, and that would make it impossible for many government offices to function effectively.
