Two roads diverge in a gonzo Trump wood—and losers loom

If DeSantis only broke more laws, / He’d be as popular as Santa Claus.

The deluded who’ll never be “great again”
Instead divide the nation in twain;
Either self-rule or authoritarian—
Civility or hell Shakespearean?

The Trumpist wail is all too clear—
After God comes this racketeer;
Oblivious as Rip van Winkle,
Ambushed by a con’s man’s swindle.

When “character” equals breaking laws—
The doltish dim back gross scofflaws.
While stupid ones mock the laws he breaks,
Dumber ones fork over legal stakes.

The more reckless Trump becomes,
The louder beat his predatory drums.
If DeSantis only broke more laws,
He’d be as popular as Santa Claus.

Only the wicked back depraved winners—
And thus they risk their souls as sinners.
What loudmouth cowards seek out jail—
Let dumber criminals their lives impale.

Let scapegoat Trump squander endless bucks,
Nose to nose with “sleazy D.A. schmucks.”
Don’t the suckered vote, then donate,
And thus avoid the harsh prison gate?

“We help pay arm-waving Trump crusades,
Rush barricades, heave safe grenades;
We are the self-declared aggrieved,
Even were we to sense we’re deceived.

“But bad times require our excesses
To offset treasonous progressives.
The country’s going down the tubes.
Redemption depends on angry rubes.”

Thus do saps egg on a House divided
And fire up waves of hatred unbridled;
Demonizing judicial control,
Trumpism wars on America’s soul.

For over a decade, Robert S. Becker's independent, rebel-rousing essays on politics and culture analyze overall trends, history, implications, messaging and frameworks. He has been published widely, aside from Nation of Change and RSN, with extensive credits from OpEdNews (as senior editor), Alternet, Salon, Truthdig, Smirking Chimp, Dandelion Salad, Beyond Chron, and the SF Chronicle. Educated at Rutgers College, N.J. (B.A. English) and U.C. Berkeley (Ph.D. English), Becker left university teaching (Northwestern, then U. Chicago) for business, founding SOTA Industries, a top American high end audio company he ran from '80 to '92. From '92-02, he was an anti-gravel mining activist while doing marketing, business and writing consulting. Since then, he seeks out insight, even wit in the shadows, without ideology or righteousness across the current mayhem of American politics.
