Poland offers a frightening example of the right-wing populism sweeping through many nations. Neoliberalism is wrecking economies, creating rage among the working class, devastating cultural institutions and eroding liberal democracy across Europe and in the United States.

While Trump’s forces are setting fire to the basic structures of American democracy, Democrats in Congress are widely perceived to be wielding squirt guns.

That being said, it’s the wholesale cowardice of the democratic party that is the cause of this disease—fascism. 

Was the recent election in Ethiopia an insult to the people and democracy? The citizens are abused and suppressed by a brutal, arrogant regime that acts in violation of all democratic ideals.

The U.S. diplomatic presence in the eastern reaches of the Middle East is in question as the security for such embassies and consulates is the host countries' responsibility. But when the state has failed, we must ask: Is U.S. diplomacy even possible in much of the region?

While refusing to be baited into violent confrontations with the radical right, we must also be vigorous in using militant, nonviolent tactics to block hate speech.
