Demonstrations over the past week have halted traffic in downtown Vancouver and shut down railways throughout the country.

Solidarity actions took the form of rallies and protests at government buildings in Canada as well as in the United States.

“Canada has bulldozered a pathway forward on this unsustainable project that is in no way honorable, in the interest of the public, or aligned with its commitment to implement federal legislation on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.”

“The remaining lungs of the earth need to be respected. Those that work to protect those lungs deserve the same respect.”

The protesters' lawyer Martin Peters said the police had acted as “security guards” for the company.

“There are seven countries right now designing programs based on what they’ve learned about ours.”
