Julian Assange should be getting a Nobel Prize, not being persecuted.

That a perfect opportunity to show a real, if still only potential, attack by the Trump Administration’s Justice Department on the freedom of the press was almost entirely ignored says a lot about the mainstream press’ actual priorities, not only in the U.S. but in most Western countries with less objectionable leaders.

The Trump administration once celebrated WikiLeaks. Now it wants to prosecute Julian Assange simply for publishing things it doesn't like. That's a threat to all journalists.

It’s unclear what charges may be brought against Assange; the Justice Department has previously considered prosecuting him over his role in the release of hacked DNC emails.

Federal Judge Brian Epps of Augusta, Georgia, said his decision to deny bail was based in part on comments by Winner that she “admires Edward Snowden and Julian Assange.”

The Central Intelligence Agency claimed that Russia used Wikileaks as “a delivery vehicle for hacked emails” that “helped” ensure Trump’s Election. The news came just as Wikileaks released evidence exonerating Assange of long-standing criminal charges.

The plan, known as “Operation Hot Pockets,” involves Assange supporters gathering around the embassy, in shifts, to create mobile wireless hotspots in order to provide the WikiLeaks founder with internet access.

Each of these stunning disclosures gives Wikileaks and Julian Assange sufficient concern to consider himself a marked man.
